Recently saw a post saying folks shouldn’t blame the insurance companies too much, but rather that they are the canaries miners used to use.

That if the insurance companies pull out of your areas, or stop covering certain things, it might be time to question the folks overseeing those areas or items, because if it’s big enough to scare insurance companies away, it certainly not healthy or safe for their customers.

It kinda makes sense when you think about it. A multi billion dollar company giving up essentially free money to “insure” people out of fear that what they are insuring is actually gonna happen.

from what I recall, the insurance industry was planning their exit for a long while, took too many losses during 2017 and 2018 fires, and they werent allowed to raise prices. In good times, they are happy to take, in bad times they bail out, not entirely their fault, but it does question if they should be allowed to operate this way.

Yeah, that was a red flag that could be seen from low earth orbit. As soon as the insurance companies pulled out, they should have known it was only a matter of time before they were facing an existential threat to the city. And they should have prepared accordingly.

Six months after the devastating Palisades and Eaton fires, California Gov. Gavin Newsom unveiled $101 million in funding Tuesday for “multifamily low-income housing development” that will “contribute to a more equitable and resilient Los Angeles.” The priority is for “geographic proximity to the fire perimeters of the Eaton, Hughes, and Palisades fires.”

Earlier this year, The Center Square broke news that California state law and a local Los Angeles ordinance require fire-destroyed rent-protected housing — which includes all apartments in the city built before October 1978 — be replaced with low-income housing. Because the affordability requirements use county-level income data, not more local incomes, definitions for “low” and “very low” income housing reflect much lower incomes than the norm for the affluent Palisades community.

“Thousands of families – from Pacific Palisades to Altadena to Malibu – are still displaced, and we owe it to them to help,” said Newsom in a statement. “The funding we’re announcing today will accelerate the development of affordable multifamily rental housing so that those rebuilding their lives after this tragedy have access to a safe, affordable place to come home to.”

on the bright side, it's the palisades. everyone there has millions in the bank and probably have the best insurance imaginable on the homes and cars. but yeah, that's terrible.

People there own a minimum of 3 houses and maybe even a mistress condo or are land lords with entire apartment complexes.

It's weird for me. I've spent many family holidays and parties there over the last 30 years. My sister in law had a nice home there $4M... it burned down. Her son, who made it big bought a house for about $8M there... it burned down, but it was a rental as his new house higher on the hill made it $16M. He is helping his parents rebuild, but it's ridiculously slow. They are all very Left leaning and I am wondering if they are making excuses for the Democrats move on the area and lack of help to cut the red tape or if they've finally seen the light. The father snapped when Trump became President in 2016 and really kind of cut us all off. His Facebook feed is filled with Trump is evil. I still see the Sister in Law, but only when she comes down here to Orange County. I guess they get what the voted for.

I was watching on the news today one year later not much rebuilt. Worst is an article I read recently that investors are buying up a bunch of lots. The owners just are too beat up to try to rebuild. Too tired to go through all the regulatory road blocks and decided to cash the chips in. That and I nsurance company roadblocks they decided to give up and sell. Areial view shows just lot after lot empty and nothing going on.
