Oscar Nods announced

They’re gonna have a tough time choosing between Blank Panther and Blackkklansman for Best Picture...

Only ones id watch are vice and the green book

Mayhe blackkklansman

Roma for best picture and Cuarón for director. Not that it’s some great movie, just that the others were all worse.

The new LOTR is going to be awesome.

I just saw this in my college library.

.....and this is why we can't have nice things. Including good best picture noms. It's all your faults for making people feel bad.

God you know it's a sad set of BP nominees when even I've seen them all.

Also who would have thought an animated Spider-Man movie would ever be a favourite.

I legitimately enjoyed Bohemian rhapsody and thought Black Panther was a solid MCU movie but they don’t seem like best picture types. Weaker year for sure though. Vice is entertaining and has a phenomenal lead performance but it’s not great. The Favourite is technically awesome and has great performances but I thought it lacked the cohesion to put it over the top.

I didn’t see Roma and Star is Born but I’ve heard the latter is very good and the former has arguably the best pedigree, tech -wise/filmmaker-wise though I’ve heard it’s not the most engaging film.

I thought blackkklansman was quite good. Driver and JD Washington were awesome in it.

Of the nominees I saw, though, Green Book was definitely my favorite. Hope it wins.

I might not even bother to watch this shitshow this year.

Black Panther wasn't even the best comic book movie last year, let alone one of the ten best films (...but it's so woke though)

Not even the critics could bring themselves to admire Vice or Bohemian Rhapsody

Where's Hereditary?
Death of Stalin?
Annihilation?

you know?.............something original
.

Collette not getting nominated for Heredeitary is an absolutely ridiculous snub, but we all saw it coming.

The two Roma actresses getting nominated surprised me as they weren't getting love in the precursor awards. Good for them- I'm sure they were very solid in the film, but I just didn't expect it.

Ok then. What does others think should have been the best picture nom for 2018?

Best new film I saw last year.

Kinda surprised it at least got a screenplay nom, to be honest. Didn’t think it would be recognized at all.

I'll have to watch that. Ethan is always a underrated actor

I watched the The Hate U Give and it is one long cringefest and unintentionally hilarious. I have to seriously question if the writer ever interacted with a white person in her life before she wrote it. No one would say some of those lines in it. No one is that lame. Yet it will likely win something to check the boxes.

It makes me sad tho that lots of foreigners watch crap like that and assume it's what life is really like for black Americans rather than the rantings of some obese BLM activist.

I refused to go see that one at the theater because I don’t trust that director after how bad his last film was. I will check it out at home on video at some point.

I have to wait until this current season of True Detective is over before I watch that one. I’m too invested in Ali as his character on there right now, he’s so good. I hate seeing actors in different roles when I’m in the middle of a performance. Maybe that’s just my own tic.

Written (& directed) by the guy who wrote Taxi Driver as well, so it’s cool to see him still doing great work & getting a nomination this far into the game.

Ali is quickly becoming someone I appreciate more and more because he has range. When you watch Green Book, his performance is awesome but it's nothing like his performance in True Detective or his performance in Hidden Figures or Moonlight.

The Favourite is not my kind of movie really but I appreciate a lot of the technical aspects. The cinematography, the score, some of the shots and editing were just overall really well done. I liked all three lead performances a good bit and thought that Nicholas Hoult outright stole pretty much every scene he was in with his character's hilarious douchey sarcasm. It just doesn't really gel overall to me. Whole is lesser than the sum of its parts type of deal. But it's a well-made, interesting film. There's also at least one or two laugh out loud moments amid the askew humor.

what a weak fucking year.

Im just old, white and bitter I guess.

I saw Roma today.
Cuaron basically filmed this as a pseudo-Documentary about early 70s Mexico.
It feels a bit impersonal, which makes the viewer a bit detached from what was happening.

Cinematography and acting are phenomenal and i do think it's a quality Film, but it didn't engage me fully, mostly due to the way it was filmed.
