It's a gameplanning issue.

She is like pre-ATT Nunes, when she gets tired she will spam sloppy takedowns instead of backing up to save her energy. She clearly won the striking exchange in round 1 against Andrade, then she went for sloppy takedowns in round 2 under pressure from Andrade.

She needs to find a good head coach, so she can work out a gameplan. She should rely on her striking more to open up takedown opportunities.

Also, boob job was a really bad idea.

I hadn’t thought of it that way. A lot of fighters with questionable cardio compensate by conserving energy, a la Woodley and Romero. One thing those two have in their favor is the constant threat of a dangerous explosion of offense to keep most opponents from getting too aggressive. Gadelha can be very good offensively, but the degree of danger just isn’t the same.
Also, I totally agree on the *ahem* enhancements. If you have struggled making weight in the past, why would you add unproductive, uncuttable weight?

Viana by submission, too big and athletic for Ciffers.
5'7" big strawweight vs. 5'1" atomweight lost at 115

Is Viana really 5'7''? I don't remember her looking exceptionally big. Interesting that the UFC thinks of Cifers as their can to try and make Viana look good after her uptick in popularity. I am still new to both these fighters but I don't think this is a mismatch. Maybe JJ Aldrich is a lot better than I am giving her credit for but I don't remember Viana looking good in that fight. If she does not fix her striking she will be going no where fast at 115.

Edit: If that height difference is real I might be having second thoughts. That is a huge difference.

Waterson, KK, and Grasso all coming to my home state. I’m gonna have to get tickets.

Smart move by the UFC, striking while the iron is hot with Viana going viral this week.

Yeah, but her opponent is going to take another beating, more than likely. Poor girl, she seems pretty cool but is about half the size of a fly fart.

I'm broken up about Anastasia Bruce being pulled from her Bellator™ debut. I remember we were willing on 'The Savage Beauty' to get her first win in the last thread (RIP, thread).

Now in 2019 our heroine gets her big chance on the biggest and best stage of NA MMA, (Bellator prelims) and she's fighting some TKD can to boot... and the commission deny it?

Bruce's experience was about to pay off in a big way, TKD is no match for MMA and Bruce is a veteran specialist in MMA, the TKD Hottie would have had no chance against this seasoned warrior. What a way to come out it would have been, 0-12 as an amateur then 12-0 as a pro (well, 1-0 but it's a step towards it right?). At the very least, somebody's 0 would have had to go!

But the big mean men in suits couldn't be having it. Rockyspeech.flv :(

Viana is a BJJer with poor takedowns and lolworthy standup, I wouldn't be surprised if she catches a big ol' barnyard haymaker to the chin from Cifers and we get a special feature screening of sleeping beauty.

That would be the 2nd time the UFC would have tried to shine a spotlight on Poly-Polyana only for her to come up short. At least this attempt promises to be more exciting to watch, whatever the outcome.

My drep, I mixed up cliffers with barber. Now I favor viana.

Yeah, it's a cool news story extolling the virtues of legitimate self-defense for women, but it doesn't change the fact that against other trained fighters (as opposed to tiny, shriveled-up Brazilian crackheads), Viana kind of sucks. Her stand-up is atrocious, getting beaten up by JJ Aldrich, who is herself more of a grappler, and making basic mistakes you wouldn't expect out of someone boxing/kickboxing after 3 months of training. And like many BJJ players nowadays, she struggles to take the opponent down to where she can actually use that ability.

All that being said, Cifers is really bad herself, and hilariously undersized to boot. Viana will obviously be a hefty favorite, ALTHOUGH it should be noted that Cifers does have some solid takedown defense and while her own stand-up is poor, it will be enough to compete with Viana, despite the massive height and reach disadvantage.

Most likely scenario? Viana turns in another underwhelming performance before winning a much closer than it should be decision or using her size and strength advantage to get a late takedown and finish. (Cifers is terrible off her back)

I'm pretty sure Aldrich is more of a striker, she comes from a TKD base as a kid, most of her fights I can remmeber she wanted to strike.

Viana vs Alrich was bizarrely placed on a PPV main card, the only explanation I can think if is they wanted to showcase Viana (who is somewhat attractive and had a 10-1 record even winning every fight by finish) so booked her vs some 'random unranked girl' to squash on PPV, which says a lot about the ineptitude of UFC matchmakers as quite a few people saw what was coming - a boring sparring match where Alrich outpointed a can crusher who got exposed but was never in danger of being finished. A Fight Night Australia Early Prelims level bout on a PPV ME, it was the kinda stuff that gives WMMA a bad name TBH.

As far as a bout vs Cifers goes, she is small but Barber said she was shocked by how strong she was, and she's even turned the lights all the way out on some opponents. She's also finished some notable regional-tier fighters with her clubbing right hand (Kali Robbins, Celene Haga) not just complete bums. So I wouldn't be surprised if Viana gets cracked and reacts badly given her 'dancing bear' standup routine in her last fight. At the same time, being much bigger and at least a little decent on the mat she could get the TD and find a sub. Should be more entertaining than her last bout either way.

I'm rooting for Cifers. Then we can claim: 105 girls > 115 girls > Men (though Gay Pornstars are still top of the 'in a real fight to the death' MMA math food chain, just ask Johny Hendricks).

Good post, but that "clubbing right hand" is thrown horrendously and a tutorial on how not to throw the punch. It's more a testament to how bad Cifers' regional competition has been than anything.

Oddly enough, Cifers' best strikes are her kicks, which are thrown technically enough and possess some impact. They can certainly help her against a much taller opponent like Viana.

Wonder who Dern will fight in March, maybe that well-known grappler JJ Aldrich? Team Namajunas don't seem to be getting any favors nowadays.

she didn't looked good, but it was mostly a striking match, against Ciffers because of the size difference i'd guess Viana can take it to the ground, and choke her out..
and yes i think she really is 5'7", but who knows

Never use weigh ins when trying to prove height. She was wearing heels here and JJ only had sneakers. The face off right before the fight gives a better indication.

touche, i just used one of the first pics that popped up on google imgs by searching "viana vs. aldrich"
maybe she isn't, but she's at least 5'6" considering Aldrich is 5'5"
