Multiplat Official DOOM ETERNAL Discussion

i wish they'd get rid of the flashing blue/orange monsters and glory kill bullshit, though. i guess there's zero chance of that.

Uh, you can turn off the glowing in the options menu in Doom 2016. I assume that will still be the case in Eternal.

I mostly missed out on the Quake 1 multiplayer scene, largely because we didn’t have the internet at home until December 1998. But when we did get it I played the shit out of Quake 2 online. To this day I’ve never had so many mods on any game as I did for Quake 2, all sorts of different multiplayer modes: lithium death match, three wave ctf, jail break, weapons factory, etc.

Back in teh day there was a Quake server hosted by one of the Internet companies in Edmonton. I lived right down the road in Calgary and it was great having an amazing 100ms ping to the server. Played the absolute shit out of the original Quake. I was a stupid kid and made up a clan called the RCMP - Royal Canadian Multiplayer Police. So lame. Good times, tho.

that's only part of the problem, i just don't like glory kills/quicktime events/being coerced into them to get ammo/health. it was the one thing keeping me from truly loving doom2016.

It’s a brilliant game play design that was created to keep you in the fight. It’s not a QTE and it plays out for like a second or two.

Eternal ups it even more which, from every early hands on impression I’ve seen, adds a layer of strategy to the fight.

seems to mean 'keep you close and often in melee range/slowing down the pace of the game.' imo, it clashes with the 'run & gun' concept.. when you're having to run at stalled enemies to cutscene melee them.

same difference.

Yeah, man, running around searching for ammo/health would do a better job of keeping you in a fight.

Glory kills are optional and should be used once, maybe twice in a normal firefight.

i'd prefer more normal drops, but ok...

and that's kind of my point? enemies are often just staggering/doubled over, waiting for you to kill them. it's kind of silly in a shooter, imo. it never sat right with me.

I see what you mean. I don’t like it very much either, but it’s not enough to keep me from really enjoying the game. That being said, I’ve been playing a lot of classic Doom and Doom II lately and as awesome as 2016 is (and I expect Eternal to be) there’s no denying that it really doesn’t play like the classic games at all.

There really aren’t any shooters like DOOM out there so I don’t think normal drops would work as well to keep you in a fight.

The game itself is silly and over the top. You should be gibbing enemies pretty frequently with the higher level weapons anyway.

I think DOOM was the best representation of a modern shooter with old school sensibilities we’ve ever seen.

It may not play like the games from 30 years ago but it sure as hell feels like a Doom game. Something that Doom 3 and their original vision for Doom (2016) definitely didn’t have.

What do you mean? Do you mean “Doom 4” or whatever it was called that they were working on and then scrapped in like 2013 or whatever?

Yeah, the one that got dubbed Call of Doom.

The wanted to emulate modern FPS games and it looked like the most generic crap you could imagine. Funny enough, the glory kills were born from it though.

It was done on purpose for the gameplay.

Most games you get low on ammo and health you run and avoid and go find and go back to the fight.

On 2016, you get low you run TO the fight to get more.

yeah, yeah. everyone knows WHY they did it. that doesn't change anything regarding my opinion of it. i knew this before i even played it. i just don't like that one aspect... especially, when it's essentially compounded by itself. ie: having to close distance to melee finish ALSO is a quicktime event/cutscene.

personally, i'd rather just have the ammo/health/armor drops increased by slain monsters. no/less glory kill bonuses, and an option to turn off the glory kill cinematics. that way, it's more fluid/faster, and you're not essentially punished for trying to play faster.

Yeah it keeps you in the fight.

I, for one, love the addition.

Glory Kills is like the single best step in FPS design to happen since MW came on the scene.

Its genius in its design and execution, and it looks expanded on in Eternal.

So I was thinking of booking my vasectomy for the morning of March 20th and then taking a four day weekend to recover and do nothing but sit in a recliner with a bag of frozen peas on my balls while playing Doom Eternal.

Thoughts?
