All of these programs can be found in several other countries and there is no fascist regimes to be found in them. But hey. If you have better alternatives to these programs that do exist and have been proven to work, then I would love to hear them.
I don't consider wanting the gov to take better care of its citizens through the funds we provide them big brother. Universal healthcare has been shown to save our country money. Something like free college would pay dividends by producing a better educated work force. Or do you think it is more American to allow foreign students come and receive a higher education from our Universities and take that knowledge back home and apply it there instead?
I think we would be better served to use government through laws and legislation to help citizens rather than turn over power and have them be the actual provider of these services. Free college is not free. It would have to be publicly funded. Where is all of this money going to come from without people paying more taxes? No one, including Bernie has said how he would pay for it other than saying he would tax the rich more. I like Bernie but if you keep taxing the rich, there will be a breaking point.
I wish education was looked at more like the Greeks did. Making it free means that every job will expect a college education for even trivial jobs. Not everyone is cut out or needs to go to college. The people that do, it'll basically be like public schools. Are you really going to get a good education out of that?
Going to college, buying a house, getting a good job. These are things that are worth working hard for. I don't think you should have to go into lifelong debt for any of them though. That needs to be resolved but if you just give people everything, there's nothing to work for. It's similar to low income housing and I can speak from personal experience on this one.
When I first moved out, I was making a little above $10 an hour (this was like 20 years ago). Because of my relatively low income, I qualified for low income housing. I found an amazing loft with exposed hardware, open floor plan and the works that I could rent for only $500 a month because of low income status. If I made above 30k, I would no longer qualify and the normal rent was $1500.
So wait...I keep low paying jobs and have an awesome loft and still manage to make ends meet, or I make above 30k and get to pay more than double the rent for the same thing? Where is the incentive to make more money and do better in life? You can just stay broke and have the government give you everything. This is why free and social programs aren't always good. They make people lazy.
I'm open-minded to solutions. Including social programs. What I'm not into is going full socialist or turning into a nanny state.
