Movies Nostalgia-overrated movies.

You're right, I was actually gonna just put the original one. The storyline, dialogue, writing, acting, etc. was horrible, but it was fun to watch I'll give them that! I think your assessment of Ninjas + Home Alone = 3 Ninjas is correct!

NgL, I liked the Rocky Loves Emily. I was the oldest so I was Rocky, my brother and friend were Tum Tum and Colt. I had a friend named Emilyne at the age when boys and girls being platonic friends was weird. They'd mock me with "Rocky loves Emilyne" lol.

Is my memory correct that there was a scene in that movie where the 3 ninja kids are playing basketball on the playground and give some bullies a 9 point lead in a game to 10, and then proceed to beat them with a bunch of dunks and flips and other crazy crap? surely my memory is exaggerating the absurdity of that scene?

I'm gonna say Hook (1991)

The premise of the story and build up were interesting; fantastic john williams score; really good performances from robin, maggie smith, hoffman and smee the pirate. The fatal flaw imo was the lost boys. Threw off the whole feel of neverland for the sake of being overly relatable to kids in the early 90's.

Top Gun
Terminator 2
Blade Runner
The Running Man
The Dark Night
Gladiator
The running man was bad from the moment it came out. It was one of the few Arnold movies I had to go rent because they didn’t play on tv. I found out why fast.

Willow is a good movie but not great. Back to the Future is an objectively great movie by almost any metric. Anyone who wants a crash course in plotting, screenwriting, storyboarding, or the creative process in general for Hollywood film need look no further than Back to the Future.

With its tight plot, engaging soundtrack, great special effects, and masterful acting performances, Back to the Future is an all time classic. Anyone who says otherwise just doesn’t understand great cinema.

For me, there are five films I consider to be “perfect” films, of which Back to the Future is one. (The others being Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Rocky, and Ghostbusters.)

I think your criteria is spot on with the exception of special effects. Thats all personal preference though.

Honestly I was quite surprised when I found out Running Man wasnt that successful in the US as from a European perspective its up their with something like Total Recall as an Arnie blockbuster.

Indeed I think its as close as anyone else got to Verhoeven's sci fi actioners from that era, maybe the direction is a bit more standard than Verhoeven but otherwise I think it feels on the same kind of level to me, a lot of imagination, very fun to watch and plenty of teeth to the satire. Maybe the latter was the problem? the satire of the contemporary US was a bit too obvious?

Nope. It was as goofy as you remember... worse, actually.

I like Casino but it boils down to the movie being negative almost the whole time. No joy or charm. It's dark and the subject matter isn't the look into the mob like Goodfellas was. It doesn't have an ounce of rewatch-ability that Goodfellas has.

Newer:
The Dark Knight--Takes all of the camp and fun out of a comic book movie. Great performances but totally overrated.
Wakanda Franchise-I honestly think these movies are mediocre. I believe the hype is because it's a black themed franchise. If it were white based it would have received the proper criticism. The second one flat out sucked.

Nostalgia fueled:
Blade Runner--I can't even watch 15 minutes before I fall asleep. Boring. I loved it in the 80s.
Fellowship of The Ring-Same as above. Good movie but long and slow.
Citizen Kane--Often ranked as the best movie ever and I don't get it. I love classics and this is boring. I get the importance of it, but in my eyes it isn't on the same level as Casablanca, Wizard of Oz, Maltese Falcon, It's A Wonderful Life.....

What are some of your popcorn entertainment all time greats?

Nothing unusual:

JP
BTTF
Batman/The Dark Knight
Jaws
The Matrix
Terminator 2
LOTR
Die Hard
Raiders of the Lost Ark

My list of overrated films

Apocalypse Now
Casino
The Dark Knight
Gladiator
Fight Club

Watched that movie multiple times as a kid. I haven’t seen it in decades. Both of you are holding a grudge against that corny scene because Rocky got a date with the hot blonde while you got stuck with the 200lbs Chicano girl. :D

Okay, and if we were could you blame us?

Random Trivia: For anyone who's seen Boyz in the Hood, that black kid plays young Doughboy (Ice Cube).

Rewatched apocalypse now recently. Great movie but it was a little too hyped up in the 90s but still a great movie that aged well.

Gladiator is great. The rest is forgettable.

2001 is a snooze fest and I'm convinced people who claim to love it don't actually enjoy watching it. Anyone who says so in nerdy forums gets roasted by pretentious snobs. That was the first red flag to me - any movie that people truly love doesn't come with an overly aggressive defense force making stupid straw man arguments ie- "Not every movie has to be a mindless CGI fest, go watch Transformers"

It looks great in HD though.

I’ve seen it once, and was underwhelmed. Just ordered it on 4k the other day, so we’ll see if my opinion has changed at all on my next rewatch.

Could it just be that you don't have a taste for slow paced atmospheric sci fi and other people have different tastes?

I never got the praise for apocalypse now to me it is probably the crappiest of all vietnam films hell even mel gibsons vietnam remake of the patriot was better.

I thought both Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket were overrated. Never made it through Saving Private Ryan. I got to the point that I just stopped watching 1900s war movies because I apparently just don't like them. I loved Inglorious Basterds... but that was probably the only one.

Never watched Dunkirk for example even though I love most Nolan movies.

If you where underwhelmed by the movie, why would you buy on 4K?

I like plenty of slow sci Fi movies like Blade Runner.

There's slow...and there's 2001.
