Agreed, but Gane took Ngannou down when the fight was on the line in the fifth round and had him beat dead to rights. Had Gane not dropped back for the submission attempt he would have been able to L&P his way to victory as Ngannou did.
That doesn't mitigate Ngannou's win in any way, he was down two rounds to nothing, and won the final three rounds; but some Ngannou fans do not want to admit their guy was pieced up on the feet and lost the wrestling exchange when the fight was on the line.
Ngannou has zero guard/bjj and yeah, Gane could have won if he didn’t sit back for the heel hook, but maybe he went for the sub because he knew he didn’t have the experience or gas tank to keep grappling, especially while down on points.
With Francis, he took Gane down because it’s what you do against an inexperienced fighter. Gane wasn’t piecing up Francis, he technically landed some decent kicks but nothing, nothing that wobbled or truly hurt the champ, Gane’s striking wasn’t lethal at all, and he was supposed to be the polished striker with better striking skills. It just didn’t show.
