I miss movies like that. It was just the 50th anniversary of JAWS and I read a decent piece about how the shark wasn’t even shown until about 75 minutes into the movie, all about suspense building, so that when they do show the animatronics, the suspense was already built. Similar to the original Jurassic park, where outside of a few smaller ones and the triceratops, the trex and raptors were shown till well into the movie. Comparing that to the CGI Buffett in the new Jurassic Park.

With using animatronics and old movie making techniques they have to take more time and planning to pull off maximum effect. With CGI, they can just go all Willy Nilly, throw in CGI anywhere at any time without the same level of planning.

One of the reasons Jaws worked so well was that Bruce, the mechanical Shark, kept breaking down. This forced Spielberg to keep him hidden for most of the movie. The vision of the Great White we see in our imagination is far scarier than anything Spielberg could put on screen.

It also meant the main trio of actors, all of whom gave career-best performances, became the main focus. IMHO, the single greatest scene in the film doesn't even involve the Great White: it's the USS Indianapolis monologue. :cool:

Yeah, the opening scenes of the actress being killed are so intense precisely because you can't see what's eating her. She gave a great performance, and our imagination filled in the blanks. The way she's pulled screaming through the water gives me goosebumps no matter how many times I watch it.

It's an urban legend she broke a rib and her screams of pain were all too real, though. ;)

The same principle was at work in Spielberg's first movie, "Duel". You never saw the truck driver's face. The unknown is scary to us monkeys.

- Lake placid had a prety good anmatronic croc. Also Aligator from the 80's had Ramon.
 
What is the big deal that there's a detention center in the Everglades?

It's land they don't have to pay for or rent and close to the southern border so deportation flights are cheaper.

All this BS about alligators and it being inhumane is just media propaganda to make it seem somehow bad.
