New Japanese fighting event "Ganryujima"

OFG= Open Finger Gloves?

EDIT: I should read the second page before answering, sorry.

The legend has returned!

Musashi vs Sasaki Kojiro was cool, but no submissions and no cage or ring sounds really lame. FUJI TV should go with whatever Sakakibara comes up with instead.

lol, did you see it in person?

Shame its not full on mma but its a good start

I like the idea of something different. Tired of the same crap that we have been fed by the industry.

sounded interesting until i saw you can win by pushing your opponent out of the circle 3 times... i can't say i would find that a very satisfying end to a competition

Mixed is all martial arts. Maybe they are trying to go after sumo fans?

What if there was a pit they fell into?

Apparently someone filmed it in pretty good quality video. Musashi bonked pretty boy Kojiro on the top of the head for the permanent TKO.

I also had the same thought, thinking how lame would it be to have a match end because you got pushed out of the ring, but I think the fact you have to do it 3 times makes it tolerable. If you get pushed out once or even twice, you'll make sure you do your best to either circle around or perhaps move forward. A carding system might need to be implemented as well, to avoid anyone running around once they have been pushed out twice. Again, its something different and I think it has to do with sumo rules and how sumo is still popular in Japan. Also, it could potentially include some exciting hip tosses/judo throws/trips/etc. at the edge of the ring. I wouldn't mind seeing strikers and and sumo wrestlers in this event to see how it plays out. I'm getting more intrigued by this promotion the more I think about it.

Those looks so gentle.

the website for Ganryujima is here: http://ganryujima.fightlabo.com

and you can see tanikawa having an open discussion about the rules with fans (i think) here: http://ganryujima.fightlabo.com/discussion/1

just using google translate, the ring may be 8 meters in diameter but tany is worried it might be too advantageous to sumo wrestlers. masato thinks 8 meters is fine if you use good enough footwork. and they seem to have been thinking about having water outside the ring, which peter aerts suggested putting piranhas in. it seems like they will try it without the water though.

i have high hopes for this event being a lot of fun.

lol. Aerts is a jokester I see.

Sounds like Virtua Fighter with the ring outs.

Antonio Inoki personalized the word "ganryujima" in 1980's when he had a "no rule, no time limit" match with a fellow wrestler on the ganryujima island with no audience.

In my opinion, the word Ganryujima is a bad choice.
Ganryujima is located near Hiroshima (both Musashi and Sasaki were from the region that included Hiroshima) and worthy Japanese people live far from those abandoned areas.

Some people just don't have any marketing senses and come up with a very strange name to events. SRC stood for sengoku raiden(legendary sumo wrestler from feudal era) championship but over 99% of Japanese had no clue who the fuck raiden was.

Odd name for fighting event but every Japanese know "Ganryujima".

PS: Ganryujima isn't located near Hiroshima.
Also Musashi and Kojiro weren't from that region.

Ganryujima, Hiroshima, hometowns of Musashi and Kojiro all belong to the region called chukoku (roughly means "mid-west"). The promoter of Musashi vs Kojiro event was a warlord of Hiroshima.
