I've owned plenty of VWs and the parts for each and every car are stamped "VW/[Audi logo]".

There are vague cosmetic differences, and in some cases, different motors, but the crossover is such that most of the pedestrian lineups are nearly identical.

I may have spoken out of turn about the A7 in particular, and I will apologize for that if I look up the specs, but it LOOKS like a modern Passat. So I wouldn't be... "out of turn" with the suggestion that they share much of the same platform. The A7 looks like a direct descendant of the dead VW Passat CC. And considering that they're basically the same company, it's unmistakable that they share the same parts.

If you want to picker over which company got it "first" (again, considering that they're the same company), I guess that means "lol guess I don't know shit about cars".

it's like standard plastic (vw) vs. very good stable plastic (audi)
also passats don't have v8 or v10 engines...
but i agree that vw stepped up in quality overall.

The parts are cross platform. Shit that goes on the Jetta, for instance, are the exact same parts that go on the A4. No difference between them.

The biggest difference in quality is going to be in the interior. Sound system, overall tech, and seat material. If that's worth an extra 10 grand (or more, depending on the car, model), go for it! But they're typically indistinguishable from a mechanical standpoint.

Both brands are notoriously unreliable past 60k miles, because they are mechanically the same.

Obviously this doesn't go for the high end of either companies, if that's not clear. But the "mirror image models" are, well, mirror images in that respect. The A7 probably shares a fuck ton of individual components with the higher end Passat models. I haven't fact checked this personally, so if you can prove me wrong... well, do it? I've never been afraid of learning something new.
