That's because that's the poverty spec with the 40i engine. The one in the photo you quoted has the V8 and starts at 120k. And the big daddy M8 has the same engine as the M5 which is over 600 hp.

For something that gives you an enviroment bonus, does less than a litre/real mile, can carry four people reasonably comfortably, have all the tech, no rattling parts, has top scores at the safety tests etc 335hp is pretty good..

These being things no american has to care about but in europe we tax fun and that's how we end up with this..

And bmw usually does a lot with their 280-330hp range cars..

Don't get me wrong, the B58 is a phenomenal engine- one of the best in recent years. That's why it's in everything from their 2 series to their SUV's (not to mention the new Supra). So it makes sense for a 3 series shopper to upgrade to it. But the 8 series is an aspirational long wheelbase cruiser- the equivalent of the Mercedes SL class. A bit chintzy to stuff an engine from a 45k car into a big ol luxury GT.

Looks like BMW saw the horrible response to their design and panic redesigned the 4.

So instead of that ugly buck tooth grill we now have an awkward combined mess that violates all the principles of BMW design tradition.

Unfortunately everyone (read euro/asian brands) is going 4 cylinder or hybrid/electric now so i guess it's a compromise as it is..

I'm driving that engine (stage 1 opt) on monday btw so i'll get back to you on that.. not qualified to speak on it as it is..

lol yeah, with the way things are going it's a surprise they're not sold with a 4 banger.

I'm a bit perplexed by the 8 series though. They already had a comfy GT with the 6 series. Would have been smarter to reserve the 8 series for their biggest engines and keep that exclusive cachet. At least for the US market.

This confirms that BMW was actually serious when it unveiled it's "Concept 4" prototype earlier this year. At the time, all the BMW faithful was in disbelief at how ugly it was and hoped it wouldn't actually become the next M4.

But we now know BMW is now committed to this new corporate face. We have already seen these monstrosities in several cars released so far-

But no one expected it to infect the smaller cars (the 3 and 4 are their most important models). Here are some comparisons with their older grills to illustrate the point.

Different character cars..

Mercedes always low key feel like driving around in your living room.. which is nice and they make great cars..

Bmw's on the other hand is a better drivers' car in many ways..

Can't really say one is better than the other, both are great cars..

Me, i like audis but i drive a bmw..
