These kiddies don't know.

Here's MJ in his 2nd season- the prime of his physical career- going for 63 with bunch of jumpers included.

Passing is really the only thing he was only "pretty good" at. He was superb at everything else.

Yea there's a good article at the link titled, "Michael Jordan's 63 points in the 1986 NBA Playoffs may have been greatest game ever played." That record has stood for 32 years now and counting. The fact that it was 63 in the playoffs was record breaking but really what sweetens the deal is it was a 67 win Celts team led by Larry Bird, at home in the Boston Garden.

Pippen was a better defender than Jordan

That's debatable. You could argue either way, I suppose. Still, Pippen quit numerous times on the team and was originally an injury liability. He didn't handle pressure very well.

Ok but who had more drop off guarding out of position?
Jordan, and that's a fair pt. I personally have Pippen as the greatest Perimeter defender in the handcheck era b/c of his overall well roundedness

but the greatest defender ever was Rodman, who was a stud SF wing defender originally and then gained some weight and was a monster as an undersized PF guarding 4/5s

Fair point but Jordan was also having to drop 30-35 a game while defending well. Something Lebron doesn't do too much of. This is one reason why I think the Bulls at their peak beat anyone in history. They had great scorers and could D up on a team with Rodman, Pippen, and Jordan. Rodman could grab 20+ boards on your ass and Jordan led the league in steals 3 times. This doesn't even account for Scottie. Just a killer squad.

maybe, its just hard to tell

The fouls are called differently now, and I would argue that Rodman would get fouled out too easily, but he was getting some EXTREMELY suspect calls against him on the Bulls due to his reputation (plays like Lebron throwing off Bell and Bell getting a foul called happened like twice a game, every game, to Rodman) and he also got mad Techs

The problem w/ that Bulls 3 peat team is the bench. It's basically Kukoc and straight bums after that. Luc Longley or Weddington can't guard a single player in todays league, they didn't have really elite 3pt shooting (kerr can shoot, clearly, but again can't guard anybody in today's game), etc....

But teams were effective in their eras, not only b/c of Stars they had but also they were constructed FOR THOSE ERAS. I mean shit it was only like 7 years ago every team had a can sharpshooter like Steve Novak taking up a spot, that's all but gone now w/ most players being better at shooting from deep

They played well together too.

Sometimes you get the feeling that the Warriors would be better off without Durant.

this is outlandish

There's a few comments on the Youtube vid actually saying the Boston defending wasn't that great.

Here's the infamous early-90s Knicks committing aggravated assault and MJ still dropping 54 on them.

Bern is great but Mark is still untouchable in the GOAT debate.

Jordan was both the best offensive and defensive player of his era. Lebron has never been close to being a top defensive player in this league.

/goat conversation

Jordan had 2 better defenders on his own team lol

Spoiler that shit. This is not the Tribeca Film festival

they put Jordan on Magic in game 1 and 2 and he got posted up and owned. Then they switched to Pippen. Jordan had 3 fouls in the first half of game 2 trying to guard Magic in the post. He was overmatched.

The other guy you are all forgetting is Ron Harper. I rate him a better defender than Jordan, too. That isnt to say Jordan wasnt an elite defender, he was. Especially pre 94 but after that his defense is VERY overstated, He lost a step.

Jordan making 1st team D and Ron Harper not tells you how much those "accolades" are worth. Nothing.

we really should make a rule around here when arguing player vs player All NBA, All defense, MVPs etc etc all literally mean NOTHING. They dont prove somebody was a better defender or player in general than another. Its just some media guys opinion not a fact.

Magic shot the ball five times in game one. In game two he went 4/13 from the field. He was 6/13 and 7/15 in games three and four. Jordan was having trouble with Magic to a degree but he wasn't getting "owned" in those first two games.

he got pulled off magic in game 2 after picking up 3 fouls in the first half.

Jordan had lots of trouble with Drexler and Hardaway in the post too. As i said he lost a step defensively as he aged. No shame in that but the media and fans still held him up to the same level because he was already "his Airness"

Pippen and Harper would regularly draw the tough wing defensive assignments. I dont bring up Rodman but he is actually the best defender of that generation so i would rate 3 guys above Jordan on his own team defensively. No shame because those are 3 of the best defenders ever, too.
