International [NATO News] Putin: lifting Ukraine missile restrictions would "put NATO at war with Russia"

NATO just doesn't seem to have its shit together based on the reactions by the Croatian and Turkish president.

Seems like our politicians have been made fools of, once again, not understanding that they're dealing with backstabbing, conniving, lying pieces of shit, whenever they step outside our borders. Turkey was supposed to be "all for it".

Again, I just have to question the desire to join such a clearly dysfunctional organization.
Some opportunists moving in for a possible shakedown or maybe just to show off for voter base. I think it was a scenario that has been considered by strong members like UK and US. I'm pretty sure they can leverage the situation under control.

As far as I'm concerned, the fact that countries like Turkey are involved in NATO should've meant that it's an automatic pass from Finland. There's no way we should be militarily allied with what is essentially a dictatorship, no different from Russia. It's going to come back to bite us in the inevitable scenario that they start acting hostile and end up committing atrocities.

I'm pretty sure NATO will not clean their mess if they get over their heads doing something nasty. Either Turkey is with NATO or it is with th rest of the assholes. Not an easy call, but not a dealbreaker for me either.

meh, erdogan is just negotiating to get something out of it.
he sincerely doesn't give a shit about finland being in nato or not.

The problem is that what he likely wants (extradition of "terrorists" by Turkey's standards) is something that we are not in a position to give them.

Anyway, it seems to be more of an issue between Turkey and Sweden.

nah, he probably doesn't want that. he wants money from the eu, and turning a blind eye for when he kills some more kurds.

If about Finald's energy resources.
They does have very huge peat resources, just EU and IEA are crying how bad for climate this " is ".
If it isn't Gazprom natural gas.
More than this: peat in europe widely is used as stuff to improve soil quality for usage in agriculture, cattle farms etc.
In some areas it is not less important for agriculture business than russia's fertilisers.

Finland even does have uranium resources...

There's some uranium in Finnish bedrock, but not enough to be mined. New technologies are being developed though and in the future Finland might be self-sufficient on that front.

Is this cos low uranium contentration in ore?
I'm interested, 1959-1961 they had produced ~30 t uranium concentrate....

Sweden btw too does have uranium.

Yeah. There's buzz about somehow soaking the uranium out of bedrock without mining it, which sound pure scifi for me.

I had signed up to urban combat course thing but it got called off because corona etc
Status report: the course was considerably intensive and quite a high level. During the weekend, we had 15 hours of technique training, few classes, and 5 hours of drills. The instructors were also very professional, and did not sugar-coat the fact that heavy losses are expected in urban combat ("TRA on ammatinvalintakysymys"). Basically, we started training the techniques and tactics in patrols, after that in squads, and finally we drilled as a platoon.

Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

Does it include forest shit or only urban stuff

Thanks for info btw

Only urban stuff. We spent most of the time training indoors, but we did very briefly train how to move in potentially dangerous outdoor areas (so that we could enter the target building safely).

The last hurdle for a swedish application is passed. The largest swedish political party decided by vote to say yes. With this there are now no obstacles left, as there are now an overwhelming majority for an application in the parliament. Only the green party and the left party (formerly communists) are against the application, and they are too tiny to be relevant.
A formal vote will be held tomorrow, but it is already a done deal.
The application is already written and ready for signing, but Sweden will wait in order to turn in the application at the same time as Finland.

I expected the vote to be yes, but the speed is a surprise. I expected Finland to apply this week and sweden in maybe a month.

Typical Erdogan, never pass up an opportunity for extortion.

Finnish president says he was 'astonished' that Turkey's President Erdogan suggested he might block Finland's NATO application
Erdogan privately told him he would be fine with Finland joining the alliance.

Finnish President Sauli Niinistö said on Sunday that he was "astonished" that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan suggested he might block Finland from joining NATO after Erdogan privately told him he would be fine with Finland joining the alliance.

"First, why I was astonished, because I had a telephone discussion with the president, Erdogan. That is about one month ago," Niinistö told CNN's Dana Bash on "State of the Union." "And then he said that they will estimate, well, positively our aim to apply for membership. And now it changed."

Finland signaled on Sunday that it would move to join NATO, a historic reversal of the Nordic nation's decades of neutrality. Sweden could soon join its neighbor in pursuing NATO accession in the coming days.

On Friday, Erdogan said Turkey did not hold "positive views" about either Finland or Sweden joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Turkey's potential opposition is of paramount importance since it and NATO's other 29 members must unanimously accept any new applications.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg have also sought to downplay Erdogan's comments. Both Blinken and Stoltenberg suggested on Sunday that Turkey's concerns could be worked out.

"I'm confident that we will be able to address the concerns that Turkey has expressed in a way that doesn't delay the membership or the accession process," Stoltenberg told reporters, per Politico Europe. "My intention is still to have a quick and swift process."

Niinistö said he was "not worried about" Erdogan's views.

Erdogan claimed that "Scandinavian countries are guesthouses for terrorist organizations." His accusation is likely a reference to Sweden's support for the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The US has also supported the SDF, which has led to tensions between the two current NATO members.

The SDF has been the West's main partner in its fight against ISIS.
