International [NATO News] Putin: lifting Ukraine missile restrictions would "put NATO at war with Russia"

The last hurdle for a swedish application is passed. The largest swedish political party decided by vote to say yes. With this there are now no obstacles left, as there are now an overwhelming majority for an application in the parliament. Only the green party and the left party (formerly communists) are against the application, and they are too tiny to be relevant.
A formal vote will be held tomorrow, but it is already a done deal.
The application is already written and ready for signing, but Sweden will wait in order to turn in the application at the same time as Finland.

I expected the vote to be yes, but the speed is a surprise. I expected Finland to apply this week and sweden in maybe a month.
In Finnish parliament there's a one man QAnon party that's against joining NATO and the rest of the parties support.

Oh yeah? Wanna reroute your demoralized army from Ukraine up to the north to "denazify" Finland and see what happen big guy?
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister: "They should have no illusions that we will simply put up with it"

LONDON, May 16 (Reuters) - Russia said on Monday that the West should have no illusions that Moscow will simply put up with the Nordic expansion of the U.S.-led NATO military alliance to include Sweden and Finland, casting the move as a mistake that would stoke military tension.

Vladimir Putin, Russia's paramount leader since the last day of 1999, has repeatedly cited the post-Soviet enlargement of the NATO alliance eastwards towards Russia's borders as a reason for the invasion of Ukraine.

The war, though, has fomented one of the biggest changes to Europe's security architecture for decades: once unthinkable moves by Sweden and Finland, which shares a 1,300 km (800 mile) border with Russia, to join the military alliance.

"They should have no illusions that we will simply put up with it - and nor should Brussels, Washington and other NATO capitals," Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov was quoted as saying by the state RIA news agency.

Ryabkov, who led talks with the United States on a doomed Russian proposal to halt NATO's eastward expansion, said the decisions by Helsinki and Stockholm to join the alliance were a mistake.

"The general level of military tension will rise, predictability in this sphere will decrease. It is a shame that common sense is being sacrificed to some phantom provision about what should be done in this unfolding situation," Ryabkov said.

Russia has given few clues about what it will do in response to the Nordic enlargement of NATO, saying merely that there would be a "military-technical response".

One of Putin's closest allies said last month that Russia could deploy nuclear weapons and hypersonic missiles in the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad if Finland and Sweden joined NATO. read more

The accession of Finland and Sweden into NATO - founded in 1949 to provide European security against the Soviet Union - would be one of the biggest strategic consequences of Russia's invasion of Ukraine to date.

Big fan of Russia cutting off power to Finland. Liberal democracy learns a hard lesson that there are consequences for their actions

Tomorrow, Sweden will be visited by Finlands president and foreign minister. Sweden and Finland will sync their application and turn them in together -probably on wednesday.

(edited to have a picture where the Finnish flag is not frayed and unraveling)

What do you think about their threat to stop exporting timber? o_O

Well, for mee looks that wood processing industry in Finland is very huge.
Russia does have cheap workforce and a lot of forests.
For capitalists better is to buy cheaper than pay to locals....salaries etc....

While by simple logic it does looks that will depend from ammount of wood Finland does needs.
F.e electrictity they are able to produce even with just peat and hydroelectric power plants alone.
While emmisions quotas and greens crying how bad is peat as fuel...

Russian imports consist 10% of what our industry uses. I lolled hard when some Ruskie tv celeb said that we'll run out of timber. Finland in not reliant on Russia for electricity either btw.

I never met Finnish person, good chance that Finland is a scam

Allegedly there are like 6.5 million outta 8 billion.... so ~.08% of world pop. No wonder.

You will selling timber to EU to keep warm. Oil and Gas are not fungible like gold and reactors and refineries are set up for Russian Gas and oil...

This is a terrible idea. Do you really want to force Russia down a more severe path? This isn't going to end well.
I get what you are saying. But we have seen what Russia has done with a non member. If you are unprotected, would you give Russia the benefit of the doubt they will leave other non nato countries alone? I don’t think they deserve it.

Then better is even to ban wood import from Russia.

This for long term might be best solution for europe: 0 trade with Russia.
We were able to conquer America with 0 fossil fuel to power ships and....sorry, produce enough food to put on table without natural gas.

You didn't had get what stuff europe is in reality......

Erdogan still saying he will block nato membership
