Social National Parks facing massive crisis

I’m not sure I understand the outrage. The demographics are changing and if less white people go that means these places have less support. I thought we’d all be in agreement that it’d be good for as many people to visit as possible. These parks are important

One solution is to give like half off or even free admission to people of color to help make the numbers more fair.

as for the workers, they could do something like the "Rooney Rule" in the NFL. Anytime their is a job opening, they would be required to interview a minority first

I like this line of thinking.

I believe the only true path to equality is by implementing more inequality.

Because they are not equitable and the nations is at a true existential crisis point.

too many white people go to national parks, and too much of the staff is white as well, which is creating a public health crisis

“A mostly white workforce, visitation threatens parks' survival and public health”

Advocates like Williams and Tariq say they hope the moment since George Floyd's death in police custody brings attention to systemic racism in the outdoors as well as other parts of society and translates into a long-term change in attitudes and behavior.

I visited 7 national parks/monuments this summer and it did not go unnoticed that there were nearly zero black people present. That said, it didn’t occur to me that this represented an existential crisis. We quite enjoyed our time and if black people, as a general rule, don’t wish to partake then they are free to spend their time/money elsewhere.

Have you been to Yosemite during the summer?

I guess Asians once again don't count in these articles. There's tons of them that visit National Parks. Hispanics too.

According to the article in the OP... it's amazing these people are able to find their way to these parks without getting lost.

Even here in the UK its rare to meet a black person who enjoys outdoorsy stuff- hiking, climbing, fishing, camping etc. Black people just seem to gravitate more towards "urban" activities - basically just city or town life. Team sports, socialising, eating/drinking, that way of life just seems to be more of a draw.

I have two black coworkers both of whom openly and proudly state they "don't do the outdoors". Granted this is usually in response to lame team building suggestions like "mushroom foraging" but they definitely don't have any other outdoor pursuits either.

I also wonder if this survey also distinguished between white Americans or white foreigners. Usually when I have been to a national park, especially the major ones like Yosemite, Zion, Grand Canyon, etc, I am always surprised by the number of Europeans that rent RVs and do a family trip if going to the major national parks out west.

granted, that is my anecdotal take, but whateva

Well the land was conquered by white colonist so maybe try harder next time former inhabitants.

Lol Ron Johnson’s senate opponent supports this messaging. Probably wants to defund the national parks and give the funding for BLM to make more george Floyd squares

Lol gonna give you a hint: If someone is complaining that national parks don't appeal enough to minorities, they probably will ask for more funding. Not to mention more funding is a nice checkmark on the environmental scorecard when you're running from the left.

the naked left hates white anglos. i wonder whos behind the curtain.

In a majority white country, you can play this game just about anywhere.

Look! There's white people outnumbering literally anybody else somewhere, or at something (anything) again, must be racism! Need to reduce those numbers and marginalize them - because that's somehow not racism when they're white.

I think we honestly have reached a point where racism against whites is the leading form of all racism in the west.

Thank you for starting a thread about a tweet from [email protected].

Hard hitting stuff right there. Do you spend hours of your day tracking down these "stories," on your own, or is there a cut and paste shared google doc that has them all ready to go?
