This is absolutely a problem for the park service. To stay relevant they need to adjust to the changing demographics of the country on the visitation side. On the employee side it is very much skewed towards those that are already from a wealthy upbringing. Wages need to be massively increased to attract people of all backgrounds of future generations and living conditions for those employees need to be improved.

Yawn. As a whole, white people are generally more into nature/outdoor activities, and also tend to live in more rural places(i.e. where all of the parks located).

There are over 400 national park service sites. Many are in urban areas or at the very least within a few hours drive of them.

the article doesn't cite any specific law or policy. Only real citation is that 23% of nationl park visitors at POC, where they are 42% of the population. However, I wonder how much that is just population distrubution vs urban and non-urban areas and proximity to a national park.

A significant part would be. Don't see why this bothers people. We want people visiting national parks right, so why not try to appeal to growing demographics who the parks haven't targeted as much before.

This paper thus proposes a feminist glaciology framework with four key components: 1) knowledge producers; (2) gendered science and knowledge; (3) systems of scientific domination; and (4) alternative representations of glaciers. Merging feminist postcolonial science studies and feminist political ecology, the feminist glaciology framework generates robust analysis of gender, power, and epistemologies in dynamic social-ecological systems, thereby leading to more just and equitable science and human-ice interactions.

minorities dont go to national parks and minorities are becoming the majority. the existential crisis is that if the majority of people in the states dont visit parks then eventually funding for them will dry up and they will disappear. getting minorities interested in national parks is good business sense.


The U.S. Census Bureau projects people of color will be a majority in America by 2044 -- a demographic shift that will impact park attendance and finances. Community advocates say physical and mental health for minority communities is also at risk.
