My Poker Goals

I agree.

If tomorrow the states announced that online poker was 100% legal, we would have another poker boom where there would be tons of donks and you could just play ABC. I'd be getting a loan and going right to Pokerstars.

I follow this guy on youtube and what you said about another poker boom. His point that he made was that if Zygna offered real money games, it'd be an absolute goldmine.

Check it out at 8:18 in the video. Even one of my comments is at the top (thinly veiled e-brag).

Gambling on a loan? Yeah, don't do that.
I teach my girlfriend and two friends poker, usually at micro's on their account.
the players at those stakes are still terrible, although I can't compare it to the golden age because I didn't play yet.

When the players are that bad and you have an understand of +EV moves, it's really hard to call it gambling at that point.

I plan on getting back into poker (seriously) this year too. I took 10 bucks on full tilt and build it to a couple thousands over the course of a year or so and then black friday hit and boom. Gone. At the time I thought I was a good player but looking back on it, I was a mediocre nit. Ive studied hand ranges better and deposited on carbon and look forward to LAG-ing it up. The varience will be higher but there will be more plus +Ev spots when playing lag if you have a good understanding of handranges and a decent handreading ability. Making adjustments to players is another thing I used to overlook but now one of my first priorities when sitting down at a table, online or live. And poker is not gambling.

On a side note...last night, I saw a guy lose about 3000 dollars playing 20-40 in the span of 2 hours.

He was on full tilt and playing every hand, raising like a maniac trying to get all of his money back in one big pot...

poor dumb bastard.

I'm going to start my session for today guys, just got my teeth cleaned, sucks during but feels good after. I got my Pepsi and snacks, current bankroll at $812.07.

Gonna open up four tables of 25NL 6 max. Also, do you guys think it's better to play FR or 6max and why?

Overpair question:

I am new to a table and I pick up QdQh on the button. I make it 3x's, I get one caller. Board is 9c 4c 6s. This is a rather wet board, how do you guys proceed? If he check raises what do? If he checks what do I do?

I am new to the table so I was wondering how you guys determine what is the best strategy?

Reraise...

if he raises, cap it...

see what he does on the turn.

You obviously have to bet if he checks. If he leads you obviously raise. Too many draws out there, I'm fine getting it all in if he check raises. You can call him down I guess, because you have about zero fold equity, and maybe you fold the turn some percentage of the time to an overcard if he shoves (I really hate that play). You can only lay that down at 25NL if you know your opponent imo. These guys are bad enough to get it in with A9 or TT-JJ. You're only afraid of a set, KK or AA. Just imo, there are probably other reasonable things to do there.

Biggest thing to watch out for is a set in that position. Call his reraise and see what he does on the turn. You should have an idea if he has AA or KK but a set is sneakier obviously.

edit: and like Fawlty said - people at that level overplay their hands to an incredible degree. I've seen guys reraise in that spot with stuff like K-9 off.

I never do something on the flop with the plan of "seeing what happens on the turn". Not with 100BB stacks anyway.

I'm guessing stack sizes are 100BB effectively. OP bets, villain raises, if we reraise so much of our stack is in the middle. What happens on the turn that makes us fold with an overpair?

It's micros, we have a strong overpair, and the board is wet. I'm shipping the flop every time. If villain has a flopped set or better overpair, that's poker. I'd bet a large percentage of the time it's a combo draw or some A9/K9 garbage or naked flush draw.

I like the calldown line more as stakes go up or if you know your man is solid. Also stack size becomes very important and dictates your play there. There's probably room to manipulate it there. 6 max your QQ is good quite often, but you will still lose an agonizing number of pots.

Alright, end of session, current bank roll up to $908.18. I feel like I played very well and made the right decisions.

Here's an interesting hand, a mini HL from the session:

Me (UTG) - 9cTc ($31.55)
Villan (BB) - ?? ($22.85)

I call UTG with the suited connector.
UTG + 2 calls .25
Dealer Folds
SB raises to $1.00
BB calls $1.00
I call the $1.00

Flop

Jh 8c 7c

I have flopped the ABSOLUTE best wet dream come true board for this hand and I'm in position.

BB bets $2.25
Doesn't matter what he has, I have to maximize value and based on how he lead out, I think he will pay off. I feel that there are too many bad cards and I'm not folding anyways.

UTG raises to $5.25.

SB folds
BB (original raiser/flop leader) calls

Turn is a Qh, board is now Jh 8c 7c Qh

BB shoves all-in for $16.60
UTG (Me) - calls immediately

BB shows 7h8h
I show my 9cTc

River is 6c, BOOM absolute nuts!

Jh 8c 7c Qh 6c

I scoop the pot of $44.95!

Just a fun hand I wanted to share.

One thing that most people don't talk about is playing within your limits - not only money limits but skill limits. If you're crushing one level, it's okay to move up, but at some point the vast majority of players reach their limit (not everyone can play on the TV level). Most people don't realize how much better the competition gets going up even one level. It's usually better to be the big fish on your level than to be an average player on a higher level. You want to keep your skill advantage as much as possible while still playing for good size pots.

Is it the BB or the SB that called? What is your image? What is his image? It's NL cash right? So stacks aren't a factor?

With no reads, I'm betting the flop 100% of the time. If he check raises, it depends on how much. I doubt I'd fold unless the guy is an absolute nit and always has a set. If I'm calling or raising his raise, I have no intention of folding down a later street. I'd probably just rather ship it on the flop rather than have him bet the turn when there is a club and give me a hard decision.
