My big stupid hype trains thread.

I decided to make some slight tweaks to the rankings this week. Basically I was looking at some names on the list and thinking that they're really not what you could term as a prospect. So if you are older than 28 years old and have more than 20 fights then you no longer qualify as a prospect. I'll also keep doing hype train posts for them if they have a great performance, I'm just not going to rank them anymore.

For people like that I've started doing divisional rankings on Tap anyway which you can find below

Hellowhosthat's MMA Rankings | Tapology

I've heard lots of raving about Mansur Azhiev so I might check him out tomm on the Armia card

I watched his last fight and he looked okay, didn't blow me away or anything though.

Alessandro Costa

Country - Brazil
Weight Class - Flyweight
Age : 25
Promotion - Lux Fight League
Record : 10-2

Excellent defence of his flyweight title in a fun fight against a tough :eek::eek::eek: Gonzalez who came to scrap. Costa actually got hurt a couple of times in a close first round but also hurt his opponent in a wild back and forth affair. From there though he really took over, showcasing a mix of speed, power and excellent grappling in order to finish his opponent. Feels like he's close to being ready for the big show.

Denis Lavrentyev

Country - Russia
Weight Class - Bantamweight
Age : 33
Promotion - Parus FC
Record : 12-2

It looked like Lavretyev was being a bit tentative in this fight and I even thought his opponent Jesse Arnett was doing pretty well in the first round until Denis decided to step it up a gear and spinning back fist his head off before ground and pounding the shit out of him leaving him a bloody mess. At 33 years old it feels like it's now or never for a UFC run, as the main training partner of Petr Yan I'm surprised he hasn't been sneaked in yet.

What’s the money to signing your friends conversion for UFC. They signed Nick Diaz’s bum friend and Conor used to be able to get all his friends in as well.

Maybe it's once you sell 500k ppvs or something. Jones managed to get Bubba McDaniel a fight, GSP got Francis Carmont in (justified in that case tbf), Brock got a couple of guys in etc.

Although Yan is p4p #1, IMO, he isnt a big PPV draw. At least not yet.

Sam Patterson

Country - England
Weight Class - Lightweight
Age : 25
Promotion - BRAVE
Record : 8-1-1

It's time I gave Sam some hype for the recent run he's been on. First he knocked out UFC vet Felipe Silva, then he clearly beat Ylies Djiroun who's only other recent losses were close decisions in the PFL. I thought he might be in trouble this time against a 14-1 Dagestani but he proved me wrong by managing to roll with the wrestling and work through the positions he needed to before snapping up his opportunity for a choke and getting the finish. He's extremely tall for the division and he's getting really good at using his length to his advantage in both striking and grappling.

What I like about his development is that by fighting in BRAVE he's getting exposed to a variety of different opponent types, so rather than coming up through Cage Warriors generally fighting Western European fighters he's already mixing it with good Brazilians and Dagestanis.

He had a draw with current champ Ahmed Amir a couple of years ago, so it probably makes sense to run that back and give him that title opportunity.

Couple of ones that sneaked past this week in terms of stuff to watch ranked people in as Combate have added a fight for Cristian Perez on Friday (which looks like a padding fight to me if I'm being honest) and Open FC's card isn't on Tap yet but their Insta shows that Dudakova is fighting in the GP final.

Yeah I remember this dude from that fight against Djiroun. Was really impressed and has an interesting physical build and fighting style.

Btw, @Hellowhosthat Do your rankings put guys who still fulfill the prospect criteria but already fought in Bellator or UFC and then left?

Bellator yes, UFC no. I've got Duncan at #15.

I did consider maybe allowing people who had one UFC fight like Max Rohskopf be ranked but decided against it.

I also feel quite sorry for Joe McColgan having to try and hold onto his LW CW title with Duncan, George Hardwick and Mike Figlak all around.

Duncan to CW was a no brainer really, that was a big setback for him on DWCS he was such a heavy favourite going in.

Both Bellator fighters that left to try the DWCS got brutally KOd and both went in as heavy favorites. I feel bad for Duncan, though, he really gave it a shot and now needs to start from 0. At least Burlinson had debuted at CW and Im assuming Burlinson will be back soon.

I think 2-3 wins for each and they'll both be in. They just kind of have to get in the queue a bit. Unfortunately they're in probably the two of the three most talent filled divisions in CW at the moment so we'll see how they get booked, but Duncan has Mike Figlak and George Hardwick in his division whereas Burlinson has to deal with Mateusz Figlak, Adam Proctor, Rhys McKee and Jesse Urholin (maybe Jack Grant too, not sure what his status is with Bellator)
