Harry Styles to Play Prince Eric and Javier Bardem Cast as King Triton in Disney's THE LITTLE MERMAID

Harry Styles is in early negotiations to play the iconic role of Prince Eric and Javier Bardem is in talks to play King Triton in the Disney's live-action remake of the The Little Mermaid. They would join Halle Bailey as Ariel, daughter of Triton.

Melissa McCarthy, Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina are also in talks to be part of Disney’s world.

Director Rob Marshall is behind the project, an update of the1989 original that won original song and score Oscars for Alan Menken. For the new film, Menken will update his score and compose a new song with lyrics from Lin-Manuel Miranda. Marc Platt, who worked with Marshall on Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns and executive produced the studio’s live-action Aladdin remake, is producing Little Mermaid. Marshall and John DeLuca are also producers, as is Miranda.

The casting of Styles and Bailey show the studio’s intent of making the music a central component of the remake. Interestingly, the character of Eric performed no songs in the 1989 animated original. That was remedied, however, in the 2000s Broadway musical, with Eric now performing several numbers, including two solos.

Styles was famously a member of the boy band One Direction who struck out on a successful solo career. He made his acting debut with 2017's Dunkirk, Christopher Nolan’s World War II drama that grossed over $526 million worldwide and collected several Oscars.

Bardem won a best-supporting actor Oscar for 2007's No Country For Old Men and he will appear in next year's Dune, Denis Villeneuve's big-budget adaptation of the classic sci-fi novel.

AVENGERS: ENDGAME Passes Avatar to Become the Highest Grossing Movie of All Time

Pandora's decade-long rule has finally ended. Disney and Marvel Studios' Avengers: Endgame has passed up James Cameron's 2009 behemoth Avatar to become the top grossing film of all time at the worldwide box office, not adjusted for inflation.

Marvel chief Kevin Feige and his team announced the milestone when taking the stage at Comic-Con late Saturday afternoon in San Diego.

“A huge congratulations to the Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios teams, and thank you to the fans around the world who lifted Avengers: Endgame to these historic heights," Disney Studios co-chairman and chief creative officer Alan Horn said in a statement.

Through Friday, Avengers: Endgame's global gross was $2,789.2 billion, $500,000 behind Avatar's $2,789.7 billion. The gap will be closed on Saturday or Sunday once weekend box office grosses are tallied (last weekend, Endgamebrought in $2.8 million globally).

At the end of last weekend, Endgame trailed Avatar by $7 million, at least on paper. In recent days, however, Disney found additional money when reconciling the movie's final global earnings, a process that occurs at the end of any film's run. That's in addition to $2 million or more from weekday ticket sales.

As fate would have it, Avatar is now part of the Mouse House empire following Disney's acquisition of much of 21st Century Fox in late March.

"Of course, even with the passage of a decade, the impact of James Cameron’s Avatar remains as powerful as ever, and the astonishing achievements of both of these films are ongoing proof of the power of movies to move people and bring them together in a shared experience," Horn continued in his statement. "The talented filmmakers behind these worlds have much more in store, and we look forward to the future of both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Pandora.”

Avengers: Endgame has shattered numerous records since debuting in cinemas in late April.

Among other achievements, the superhero extravaganza scored the biggest global opening of all time with $1.22 billion, including an all-time high of $357.1 million domestically and $866.5 million overseas.

The film is the fourth outing in the blockbuster Avengers series and the 22nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Endgame's domestic total is currently $853.4 million and $1,935.8 billion internationally.

Comic-Con: Marvel Studios Announces Phase 4 Titles Including BLADE, SHANG-CHI, ETERNALS and More

"The Infinity Saga is complete," Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige declared at Comic-Con Saturday. After 11 years and 23 movies, the Marvel boss pulled back the curtain on the Marvel Cinematic Universe's future as it enters Phase 4 following the events of Avengers: Endgame. (Scroll to the bottom for the full slate he revealed.)

After touting that Endgame will soon overtake Avatar as the No. 1 film of all time, not adjusted for inflation, Feige set dates for a number of movies and Disney+ shows.

But at the end of the panel, just when fans thought he was done, Feige caused a new uproar by casually telling fans there were films he didn't have time to talk about, such as Black Panther 2, Captain Marvel 2 — and more importantly, Fantastic Four and movies about mutants (code for X-Men). He also unveiled an A-list casting, revealing that Mahershala Ali would be joining the MCU as Blade, the vampire hunter that was played by Wesley Snipes in three movies previously.

While those films don't have dates, earlier in the panel Feige revealed that up first will be Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, which will open May 1, 2020 and is directed by Cate Shorthand.

"What's more exciting than the mythology of Marvel movies," asked Rachel Weisz, on stage with the movie's cast.

Johansson, meanwhile, commented, "I couldn't have played this iteration of the character 10 years ago...I get to play her as a fully realized woman with many facets."

The Eternals will follow on Nov. 6, 2020 and Feige brought out the cast, including Angelina Jolie as Thena, Richard Madden as Ikarus, as well as Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek as Ajax, Lia McHugh and Don Lee as Gilgamesh.

Chloé Zhao is directing the film, which Feige described as "full on Jack Kirby," a reference to the cosmic property's creator.

Nanjiani described Marvel as being "throwback" movies. He refereed to Casablanca and other movies that had various tones to them, made in a time before everything was split into definitive genres. "Marvel is a throwback to those old movies. They have action, romance, comedy. They have everything!"

Hayek, meanwhile, underscored the representation angle of the movie, saying Eternals will be as diverse as the Hall audience itself.

While the studio no longer has Robert Downey Jr., it does have a new weapon in its arsenal: Disney+, the upcoming streaming service that will feature Marvel shows that connect to the films. Feige revealed Falcon & Winter Soldier, starring Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, will bow in the fall 2020.

Mackie, whose Sam Wilson was given the mantle of Captain America at the end of Endgame, came out on stage with the Captain America shield. Meanwhile, a video message from villain Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl) appeared on screen, with the villain saying he looks forward to seeing the heroes soon.

Next up, Feige revealed the title for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which he revealed will star Simu Liu as Marvel's first Asian leading man. It will open Feb. 12, 2021 and also star Tony Leung as the real Mandarin (Ben Kingsley played an imposter version in Iron Man 3). Awkwafina is also to star in the film from Destin Daniel Cretton.

Cretton gave Feige and Marvel props for pushing non-white acting for the forefront. "Kevin and MCU reflect all the beautiful colors that I see in this room. To be a small part of that is very special to me."

WandaVision, the Disney+ series starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Betteny will follow in spring 2021 and take place after Endgame as Wanda Maximoff deals with the loss of her partner, Vision. Captain Marvel character Monica Rambeau, who was a child in that film, will appear as an adult and be played by Teyonah Parris.

Loki, starring Tom Hiddleston's trickster god, will debut on Disney+ in spring 2021. Feige revealed that this features the 2012 version of the character who in Endgame stole an Infinity Stone, but it will take place after Endgame. Part of the mystery is where he's been and what he's been up to.

The upcoming Doctor Strange sequel was revealed to be titled Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It will hit theaters May 7, 2022. Olsen's Scarlett Witch will appear in the film, and her series WandaVision will lead into the movie. Filmmaker Scott Derrickson, known for his horror work, described it as Marvel's first scary movie.

The next Thor movie was revealed to be titled Thor: Love and Thunder, and will debut Nov. 5, 2021 from filmmaker Taika Waititi.

"As new king (of Asgard), she needs to find her queen. That will be the first order of business," star Tessa Thompson told the crowd to cheers.

In a big twist, Natalie Portman will return to the franchise as a female Thor, with the story taking its cues from the recent comics run penned by Jason Aaron. The actor hasn't acted in a Marvel movie since 2013's Thor: The Dark World, and was believed to be done with the MCU.

Back on the Disney+ front, the alternate reality animated series What If...? will hit summer 2021, with Jeffrey Wright voicing the all-seeing Watcher. A number of MCU actors will reprise their roles.

A Disney+ Hawkeye event series will star Jeremy Renner, who strolled out on stage, and will feature the fan favorite comic book character Katie Bishop, a young protege of the archer. It hits fall 2021. The theme of show will be Hawkeye, a superhero with no superpowers, teaching someone else how to be a hero with no powers.

Ridley Scott to Direct Ben Affleck and Matt Damon in THE LAST DUEL

Ridley Scott is set to direct a reteaming of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck in The Last Duel, a revenge thriller based on Eric Jager's book about dueling warriors in 14th century France, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

The project is based on Jager's The Last Duel: A True Story of Crime, Scandal, and Trial by Combat in Medieval France, and recounts a real-life revenge drama whose script will be co-written by Nicole Holofcener, Damon and Affleck.

The project will be co-produced by Scott Free Productions and Damon and Affleck's Pearl Street Films shingle.

The Last Duel also marks a rare onscreen collaboration for Damon and Affleck, who starred in Good Will Hunting, the heartfelt 1997 drama that also featured Robin Williams and went on to win two Oscars at the 70th Academy Awards, including for Williams' performance.

Scott last directed Matt Damon in The Martian, an outer space adventure project from 20th Century Fox that marked his 21st feature.

Elsewhere, Damon is teaming with Spotlight director Tom McCarthy and Participant Media on a new feature project, Stillwater, in which he plays an American oil-rig roughneck from Oklahoma who travels to Marseille in France to visit his estranged daughter, who is imprisoned for a murder she claims she did not commit.

Damon will also be seen starring opposite Christian Bale in Fox's upcoming drama Ford v Ferrari, which is due out Nov. 15. Affleck is set to star in Universal's I Am Still Alive, which he will also produce via his Pearl Street Films.

Rutger Hauer, Blade Runner and The Hitcher Actor, Dies at 75

Rutger Hauer, the rugged Dutch actor who starred as renegade replicant leader Roy Batty in Ridley Scott's 1982 sci-fi classic Blade Runner, has died. He was 75.

Hauer died Friday at his home in the Netherlands of an undisclosed illness, his agent, Steve Kenis, told The Hollywood Reporter. His family did not want the news revealed until his funeral, which was held Wednesday.

Hauer made his Hollywood debut opposite Sylvester Stallone in Nighthawks (1981) and went on to appear on the big screen in such films as The Osterman Weekend (1983), Ladyhawke (1985), The Hitcher (1986), Wanted — Dead or Alive (1986), Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992), Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002), Batman Begins (2005), Sin City (2005), Hobo With a Shotgun (2011), Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) and The Sisters Brothers (2018).

Born Rutger Oelsen Hauer on Jan. 23, 1944, in Breukelen, just south of Amsterdam, he was the son of actors. He began his career in 1969 on the Dutch TV series Floris, directed by countryman and director Paul Verhoeven, who then cast him in Turkish Delight (1973) and Soldier of Orange (1977).

He really made a name for himself with his turn as Batty and the character's "Tears in the Rain" speech — which he improvised — in the original Blade Runner.

"Rutger read that speech and then went on with a couple of lines about memories in the rain," co-screenwriter David Webb Peoples told THR in 2017. "And then he looked at me like a naughty little boy, like he was checking to see if the writer was going to be upset. I didn't let on that I was upset, but at the time, I was a little upset and threatened by it.

"Later, seeing the movie, that was a brilliant contribution of Rutger's, that line about tears in the rain. It is absolutely beautiful."

Hauer said he turned down a role in Wolfgang Petersen's Das Boot (1981) to work on Blade Runner, which he noted "wasn't about the replicants, it was about what does it mean to be human?" The late Philip K. Dick, whose novel served as the basis for the film, called the actor "the perfect Batty — cold, Aryan, flawless."

Hauer also won a Golden Globe in 1988 for his work on the TV film Escape From Sobibor and recurred as the supernatural creature Niall Brigant on HBO's True Blood.

He was known as an environmentalist and AIDS awareness activist. Survivors include his wife, Ineke; they met in 1968 and were married in 1985.
