The Raid Actor Joe Taslim Cast as Sub-Zero in New Line's MORTAL KOMBAT

New Line's Mortal Kombat movie has found its Sub-Zero. Actor and martial artist Joe Taslim will be playing the superpowered fighter in the live-action adaptation of the video game.

James Wan and his Atomic Monster banner are producing the movie, which will be the feature debut of veteran commercial director Simon McQuoid. Todd Garner will also produce, with Larry Kasanoff, E. Bennett Walsh, Michael Clear and Sean Robins executive producing.

While the plot of the movie remains unknown, the video game centers on a massive roster of character fighters from different realms in a fictional universe battling for supremacy. Greg Russo penned the current version of the screenplay.

First released in 1992, Mortal Kombat has sold over 49 million copies, spanning over a dozen canon games and expansions, making it one of the most profitable video game franchise of all time. Mortal Kombat 11 was released in April and has become the most successful launch in franchise history.

The game was previously adapted into a movie in 1995 from director Paul W. S. Anderson that went on to gross an impressive $122 million at the worldwide box office. It was then followed by 1997's Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.

Sub-Zero was one of the original characters featured in the 1992 game and is known for his attacks involving ice. He has a long-running rivalry with similarly garbed fellow kombatant Scorpion.

Taslim's is the first deal to close for Mortal Kombat, which is set to shoot in southern Australia later this year.

An alum of Indonesia's national Judo team, Taslim made his acting debut in cult action film The Raid. His other feature credits include Fast & Furious 6, Star Trek Beyond and recent Netflix feature The Night Comes for Us. Taslim can be currently seen in the Cinemax Bruce Lee series Warrior.

Storm Reid, the actress who starred in A Wrinkle in Time and now appears on HBO's Euphoria, is joining the heavy-hitting cast of Warner Bros.' The Suicide Squad.

James Gunn is directing the follow-up to the 2016 feature based on the DC Comics anti-heroes. Gunn’s installment sees Idris Elba, John Cena and David Dastmalchian star alongside returnees Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney and Viola Davis.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but it is known that Reid will play the daughter of Elba’s character.

The project is gearing up for a September start, with an Atlanta shooting location being eyed. Charles Roven is among those producing the action-adventure pic.

Reid broke through when she nabbed the lead in Disney’s high-flying adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time, directed by Ava DuVernay and with Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon also in the cast. The actress also had a role in DuVernay’s acclaimed Netflix docudrama When They See Us, centering on the Central Park 5, and currently appears alongside Zendaya on HBO’s envelope-pushing teen drama Euphoria.

Reid will shoot a role in Universal and Blumhouse's The Invisible Man before segueing to SuicideSquad.

For reasons currently unknown, it seems Guy Ritchie won't direct the third installment to RDJr's SHERLOCK franchise. Rather it will be Dexter Fletcher, who just directed ROCKETMAN, and if you're a fan of Ritchie you might remember him from LOCK STOCK:

The Haunting of Hill House Actor Oliver Jackson-Cohen to Star in THE INVISIBLE MAN

Universal and Blumhouse have found the Invisible Man. The Haunting of Hill House star Oliver Jackson-Cohen will play the title role in The Invisible Man, The Hollywood Reporterhas confirmed. He joins Elisabeth Moss, Aldis Hodge, Harriet Dyer and Storm Reid in the update on the classic Universal monsters character.

Saw co-creator Leigh Whannel penned the script and is directing the film, which will be shot in Sydney, Australia this month.

In addition to Netflix's Haunting of Hill House, Jackson-Cohen's credits include the BBC drama Man in an Orange Shirt and the NBC Oz reimagining Emerald City.

Back when Universal was plotting a shared universe based on its monsters, Johnny Depp was set to star in a film based on the character. The box office failure of the 2017 Tom Cruise film The Mummy saw the budding Dark Universe, as it was called, fail to get off the ground.

The Invisible Man opens March 13, 2020 and will be produced by Jason Blum for his Blumhouse Productions and by Kylie du Fresne (Upgrade) for Goalpost Pictures, in association with Nervous Tick for Universal Pictures. Whanell will executive produce.
