EDGE OF TOMORROW Sequel Officially in Development with Matthew Robinson to Pen Script

wgIlSuc.jpg

It's Edge of Tomorrow all over again. Warner Bros. is developing a sequel to the Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt sci-fi movie and has brought aboard writer Matthew Robinson to develop the script, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Edge of Tomorrow filmmaker Doug Liman, Cruise and Blunt are expected to return, dependent on Robinson delivering a script they like. Robinson co-directed and co-wrote the 2009 Ricky Gervais comedy The Invention of Lying and was one of the screenwriters of the 2016 movie Monster Trucks.

Frequent Cruise collaborator Christopher McQuarrie wrote the script to the original Edge of Tomorrow, with credited screenwriters Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth. The film centered on a military PR man Cage (Cruise), who gets stuck in a time loop in the midst of an alien invasion. Every time he dies, he starts the day over. Eventually, he comes across the path of war hero Rita (Blunt), and learns that she too had once been stuck in a time loop. Every day he must convince her to help him with his cause.

Edge of Tomorrow was based on the Hiroshi Sakurazaka manga All You Need Is Kill, and somewhat controversially, was rebranded as its tagline Live. Die. Repeat. on home entertainment. The film was not considered a runaway hit commercially, making $370 million globally on a $178 budget, but it was a success with critics and has grown in popularity over the years on home entertainment. Liman, Cruise and Blunt continue to get asked about sequel possibilities in interviews, and have all spoken publicly about their interest in returning.

That has a lot of potential.

I dont have high hopes from the trailer. I think there is another character Joaquin and this movie can do. They should go with Riddler or Mad Hatter. Both are wacky, and looney, but not as animated. I dont think Joaquin can pull off an animated Joker.

I guess we will find out. I liked what I saw in the trailer, but we didn't really see him fully tested as you pointed out.

Here is the Joker trailer

Um, that's a fan-made trailer with some behind-the-scenes footage of the real Joker movie and spliced together with different Joaquin Phoenix movies, mostly from The Master. There's even a clip from Tim Burton's Batman in there.

Oh really, well, I am not the expert here no biggie.

Uhhh...didn't catch that. The  indicates you're in distress about it? Doesn't really change the discussion much though, right? One person still feels Phoenix has promise and the other is skeptical.

From the start I think this Joker movie could be really good. I think when the first trailer finally hits, a lot of the detractors will do a 180. I just don't like that it's not connected with the rest of the DCEU. It just shows that whoever is running DC Films don't have an overall long-term plan and doesn't have a firm grasp on how to manage all these precious DC properties.

2nd Trailer for James Gunn's "Superman Turned Evil" Movie BRIGHTBURN

What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister? With Brightburn, the visionary filmmaker of Guardians of the Galaxy and Slither presents a startling, subversive take on a radical new genre: superhero horror.

Idris Elba is replacing Will Smith in the next Suicide Squad movie.
Well, James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad just got a hell of a lot more interesting. According to Variety, Idris Elba is going to replace Will Smith in the role of Deadshot! That’s certainly a surprising and unexpected choice, but I’m totally on board with it, and I think Elba will make a badass Deadshot!
Will Smith had to bail on the project due to scheduling conflicts, and the studio was obviously keen on getting another A-lister to replace him. Mission accomplished!
There’s no information on what exactly Gunn is planning for the story, but it’s been said that his “focus is to take the franchise in a new direction with a mostly all-new cast of characters and actors.” Margot Robbie is also expected to reprise her role of Harley Quinn, but that has yet to be confirmed.
The Suicide Squad is set to be released date is currently set for Aug. 6, 2021.

Brian K. Vaughan to Pen GUNDAM Live-Action Adaptation for Legendary

Famed comic book creator and New York Times bestselling author Brian K. Vaughan has signed on to write the screenplay for Gundam, the first live-action film based on the popular mecha anime and science fiction media franchise created by Sunrise. The project hails from Legendary Entertainment, in a co-production with Sunrise. Vaughan, best known for creating comic book series like Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina and Runaways, will also serve as an executive producer on the pic.

Next month marks the 40th anniversary of Mobile Suit Gundam, the mecha anime series that launched the Gundam success story as both a media and toy franchise. That 1979 series, created and directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, was a middling success when first aired but then won over an impassioned fan following through reruns and a popular tie-in toy line.

Tomino’s animated saga was part of the mecha genre, the sci-fi subgenre that centers on robots in combat (and usually they are giant robots), but it veered from the formula followed by its mecha predecessors in a manner that added dramatic new tones and textures to the genre.

Previously, the giant robots in mecha stories were presented as almost magical devices with celebrity pilots who operated them via remote control or command (not unlike Gigantor or The Iron Giant). Tomino found those Aladdin-with-a-robot tales flimsy so he re-envisioned them as colossal weapons at the center of a complex military epic. The giant robots, like Flying Fortress, had crews with ace pilots and everyman mechanics, which lent new perspectives, pathos, and battlefield energy to the saga and then to its genre.

Gundam has generated billions in the decades since and altered the course of anime while rewiring the ambitions and aesthetics of the mecha genre entirely. Among the many franchises influenced: Legendary’s Pacific Rim franchise is a direct descendant of the Gundam school of militarized mecha mythology.

The project will be overseen by Cale Boyter on behalf of Legendary with the Sunrise creative team.

Back in December, it was announced Vaughan had inked a three-year overall deal with Legendary, in which the studio would adapt several of Vaughan’s creator-owned comics, as well as produce exclusive, original projects developed by Vaughan for film and television across traditional and non-traditional platforms.

Up next, Vaughan serves as an executive producer on the FX television adaptation of Y: The Last Man, which was adapted by Michael Green and Aida Croal and stars Diane Lane, Timothy Hutton and Amber Tamblyn. He’s also an executive consultant on Hulu’s Runaways series, which is in its second season.
