Shawn Levy's Star Wars Movie Now Titled STAR WARS: STARFIGHTER; New Details and May 28, 2027 Release Date Revealed

StarWarsCelebration25Tokyo_003_sFdY41j6-1.jpg

Director Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling took the stage today in Tokyo, Japan for Star Wars Celebration, officially announcing their upcoming project Star Wars: Starfighter.

Set five years after The Rise of Skywalker (2019), the new installment is set to go into production this fall and premiere May 28, 2027 exclusively in theaters.

Said Levy, “There are many rumors, some true, some not. … This is not a prequel, this is not a sequel. It’s a new adventure.”

Gosling praised the installment as “such a great story with great and original characters,” as well as “so much heart and adventure,” adding: “There is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.

Until now, the project which is being written by Jonathan Tropper for the last two years, has been under wraps. It’s a standalone movie outside the Luke Skywalker core canon. While Disney’s Lucasfilm has multiple Star Wars features in development with James Mangold, Simon Kinberg, and a Rey post Episode IX movie with Daisy Ridley returning and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy directing, the Levy Star Wars project is known to be in tip-top fastrack shape.

It was recently reported that Anora Oscar winner Mikey Madison passed on a supporting role offer in the new Levy directed Star Wars movie.

Levy is a cornerstone filmmaker for Disney having delivered them the highest grossing R-rated movie of all-time with Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine which minted $1.33 billion worldwide.

Levy’s Star Wars movie would be the second after next year’s The Mandalorian and Grogu to hit the screen following 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker which minted $1.077 billion.

Joseph Kosinski is headed to Miami. The filmmaker behind the $1.49 billion hit Top Gun: Maverick is attached to direct a Miami Vice movie for Universal, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

Nightcrawler filmmaker Dan Gilroy is penning the script, with The Batman producer Dylan Clark producing through Dylan Clark Productions and Kosinski producing through Monolith.

Miami Vice began life as the Anthony Yerkovich-created TV series which ran from 1984-1990 on NBC starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as two undercover Miami police officers known for their love of pastel suits. Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell starred in a 2006 feature of the same name that Mann directed and which earned $163.7 million globally.

Kosinski has been kicking the tires on the project since last year, though Miami Vice will not be the next project he directs, with his busy schedule including a UFO conspiracy thriller that Apple won in a bidding war in March. He next has the Brad Pitt racing drama F1 due out in June.

Top Gun: Maverick turned Kosinski into one of the most in-demand filmmakers in town after directing features such as Oblivion and Tron: Legacy. He is repped by CAA, Untitled and Sloane Offer.

Gilroy's credits also include The Bourne Legacy and work on brother Tony Gilroy’s Andor. Clark is also known for Matt Reeves’ Planet of the Apes movies and Kosinski’s Oblivion.

Guy Ritchie to Direct ROAD HOUSE 2 for Amazon MGM Studios with Star Jake Gyllenhaal Returning

Guy Ritchie has signed on to direct Road House 2, the sequel to Amazon MGM Studios’ hit action movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

Will Beall, whose credits range from comic book movies such as Aquaman to action flicks including Bad Boys: Ride or Die, is writing the script.

Gyllenhaal will reprise his role as Dalton, the ex-UFC fighter who takes a job as a bouncer at a Florida Keys bar. Gyllenhaal will also produce with Josh McLaughlin via the duo’s Nine Stories Productions banner along with Charles Roven and Alex Gartner of Altas Entertainment.

Plot details, as well as the setting, are being kept under the shirt.

The 2024 movie, a remake of the 1989 movie that starred Patrick Swayze, was directed by Doug Liman and was written by Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry. It was a massive hit for the streaming unit, attracting nearly 80 million worldwide viewers on Prime Video after only eight weeks.

Liman was unlikely to return for a sequel thanks to a nasty fight with Amazon over the release of the movie, which he maintained was owed a theatrical release. Amazon countered that the filmmaker chose a streaming release but with a higher budget.

Ritchie is considered a good replacement for the piece. The filmmaker already has a relationship with Gyllenhaal, having previously worked together on Amazon MGM’s Guy Ritchie’s the Covenant, a well-regarded action drama set during the Afghanistan war. And the filmmaker has shown a propensity for kinetic and knuckle-busting movies with decades of thrillers, big and small.

Ritchie has also shown himself to be a filmmaker with a lit fuse behind his back, directing movies like a man possessed. After directing 2021’s Wrath of Man, he had two movies released in 2023 — Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre and The Covenant — then created the 2024 series The Gentlemen for Netflix while also putting out spy action caper The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.

This year, he has two movies in postproduction, Wife and Dog and In the Grey. He also has Fountain of Youth, starring John Krasinski and Natalie Portman, coming from Apple later this year and is serving as director and exec producer of Prime Video’s upcoming series Young Sherlock.
