I have been reading a bunch of people mentioning the gloves the fighters use in MMA and boxing. Boxers usually use somewhere between 10-14 ounce gloves while the UFC fighters use 4 ounce gloves. I just wanted to clear one thing up real quick.....
A punch will hurt WAAAAY more if you got hit by a boxing glove than a MMA glove.
Fighters wear gloves to protect THEIR hands....not the opponents face. I would rather fight a guy bare fisted, and let me wear the gloves. 3 punches into the fight, if he landed good and I didn't go out, 1) he'd have broken some bone in his hand or 2) feel like he has broken some bone in his hand and will not swing as hard anymore.
The advantage of boxing gloves in NOT in the padding. The hissing sound you hear during a boxing match when a punch is thrown is the fighters breathing when they throw, not the air deflating out of the glove from the cushion. Every trained fighter is taught to breath when he punched so not to tire as fast. Thus the hiss hiss during punches. But also with the bigger glove, it is easier to block and deflect punches in defense.
Just a little info for the masses. Joe Rogan always seem to mention the "4 ounce baby gloves" during every show but he seem to always fail to mention the smaller the glove, the less powerful the impact. None of this applies to "right on the button" punches. A couch pillow can KO someone if hit "on the button". If you would like to try it out, get both types of gloves and let someone hit you in the forehead kinda light like with each. A small punch with a boxing glove will rattle you medulla ablongata.
Well said but its a different damage! MMA gloves cause more Cutaneous damage (more sting) to the dermis, and boxing gloves cause more neurological damage cause of the shock wave. You can take more neurological damage, and recover thats why Boxers go 12 rounds, and MMA fights are only 5 rounds max cause your eyes, cheeks and nose will be chopped liver. I still rather be hit with a boxing glove any day ova a MMA glove hence MMA gloves always hurt more, but I do have a headache after sparring with boxing gloves.
For example before queensbury rules two great bareknuckle prizefighters only threw a couple punches a round! Fights laster 20 rounds or more cause no one would stay in the pocket, just like what happens in MMA. Thats what makes for some boring fights no exchanges and two guys jumping in a out of the pocket to exchange combinations/technique, but no one counters cause you duhh have to be in the pocket to counter (except for the recent Fisher vs. Stout). Except for MMA upper level strikers with balls (Fisher v.s. Stout ex.).
I am not inferring to K-1 or Boxing guys that transistion to MMA either. It has been proven in many cases when K-1, and boxers fight a guy with MMA gloves they don't stay in the pocket either except for a minority (Hunt, Cung Le, Sakara, Stout, Ludwig etc... sometimes you'll even see Cro Cop stay on the outside ,and throw kicks ,and not stand his ground and not calling him a pussy or anything cause hes like one my favorites
Thats why I think Fedor and Gonzaga beat him cause they stayed pressing and coming forward. He'll circle you counter you with kicks or his left hand if you come forward, kick step to the left to make space, I heard boxing coaches call it quarterback snap and kick some more but when he hurts you with kicks thats then he usually exchanges with punches and then he's on your ass like flies on shit). No one wants to stay in the pocket and get hit with those little gloves Carter Williams, Mike Bernando all looked reluctant to stand and trade with 4oz gloves (although the grappling element played a part) on even both have knockout power in both hands..
Futhermore I train at American Top Team branch in Orlando, FL I talk my coach Paul Rodriguez (Marcio Simas, and Ricardo Liborio Brown Belt UFC 32, Shooto, pride bushido so hes been around the block). About seeing other MMA gyms spar MMA with 12 and 16 oz gloves on TV, the TUF shows the Tapout show etc.. (I actually thought it would be a good idea) He said its counterproductive cause you wouldn't wear them in a fight, and gives a false sense of security, and make a guy more likely to stand and trade like you see in a boxing match (throw like a 4 or 5 punch combo). So we wear the 6 oz MMA glove made by combat sports, Title and other when we spar.
