MMA gloves vs Boxing gloves

I'm not the hardest hitting person in the world, but when I hit the heavy bag I only need something to cover my hands just enough so it doesn't tear the skin off. My wrists don't hurt, and whenever I use wrist wraps it limits mobility in my hands and I just don't like it. Tomorrow after the 4miler I'm gonna try it out with heavier gloves and wraps, just to see how it feels again.

I love how you slip in the 4 mile run and you post your PFT score...lol

You're wrong. Maybe whoever has been hitting you with MMA gloves can't throw punches.

Yes, boxing gloves protect the hands. They protect the hands of fighters trained to emphasize good punching.

The design of boxing gloves is also suited for DEFENSE, like covering. I'm assuming you don't know much about defense in striking because the size and shape of the gloves has a LOT to do with this.

Not saying one is better than the other... just different as always. And for good reasons. MMA gloves are designed for grappling as well. You can't grapple with boxing gloves. In striking competiton the gloves are usually about 8 oz. and for someone versed in striking, that's worse than a grappler's punch in 4 oz... for sure!

Is someone training you? How much does your bag weigh? The harder you hit, the MORE padding and wrapping you need, no matter how conditioned you are... so there's something wrong here. :icon_neut

If you hit a heavy bag with a 4oz glove and then with a 10oz what strike makes the bag sway more? the heavier glove no question.

Lets say you were tighly covering up you head with your arms and the strike was to land flush on the arm what glove do you think would most likely produce a ko? ill bet on the heavier glove every time.

PPL say well there are more kos per 100 fight in mma but fail to realize that in boxing it is easier to block punches, harder to get punches trough holes not to mention no kicks, knees, or elbow and that a KO in mma = a standing 8 count in boxing and boxing has no striker vs grappler.

If bigger/heavier gloves do more damage, someone please explain to me why 16oz gloves are the minimum they'll let me spar with?

What .. they want me to do MORE damage to my sparring partners?

Look, have you (the OP) ever actually TRIED this little theory of yours? Tell you what, stand still and have someone thump you once with a MMA glove and once with a 16oz glove.

All we need now are some volunteers from our Sherdog studio audience to do the thumping in this little scientific trial.

Anyone? .......

It doesn't seem like theres a whole lot of research done on this subject, but I'll give you my two cents from my own personal experience.

Fighters generally spar with 16s for conditioning, hand protection and to avoid cuts. At my gym 16s are not the minimum. I've seen guys spar with 14s. One time this kid with 14s sparred me while I wore 16s. I was a little worried that his punches might hurt more but I'd figured giving myself an disadvantage would only make me better. I was surprised to find that his glvoes felt a lot more cushiony. Despite being smaller, the material was a lot softer. His punches didn't hurt as much as when he wore 16s of a different brand.

Then there was this one time where this guy's gloves felt like rocks. I thought this dude was wearing 10s or 12s. I was like, "Dude, how big are those gloves?" He showed me the gloves and it said 16oz on them. My conclusion is that the material the gloves are made out of are a better indicator of how much damage it does.

I agree Rinksterk. Seems like the tighter stuffed, high quality gloves feel harder than the cheaper gloves.
I have cheap 10oz bag gloves that feel softer than my 16 oz sparring gloves.
