MMA gloves vs Boxing gloves

i do boxing and imo good boxing gloves gives you more punching power. they don't do cuts but they stun you more than naked fist

Old school bare-knuckle boxing matches went on for hours. The longest boxing match in history was Andy Bowen vs Jack Burke, and they didn't wear any gloves.

They fought 110 rounds, 7 hours and 19 minutes. The fight ended as a draw because both boxers were too exhausted to continue.

Just something to think about.

Whens the last time you saw a boxing match that was unlimited rounds?

You forgot to mention that with the big gloves you block more of your face so its less likely you will take a clean shot to the dome.

Because of their added weight, heavier gloves are generally considered safer, since force in physics is a measure of mass times acceleration and a heavier glove takes longer to accelerate over short distances. As importantly, heavier gloves contain more padding. A blow to the head with a heavily padded glove is less likely to cause the sudden acceleration of the skull that causes much of the brain trauma associated with boxing injuries. Common weights for gloves in the United States are sixteen, twelve and eight ounces. Many athletes train with heavier gloves than they will use in competition, as a way to increase endurance.<---- From Wicki

Also, the larger the surface area the more spread out the impact. You lie down in 2 feet of snow you sink about an inch; you stand in 2ft of snow and you sink a foot. With smaller gloves overall force is more concentrated on the area of impact. That is bad for your temple.

pwned by basic physics

what kind of logic is the ts using? the bigger the glove, the more padding, so less impact. this guy has it completely backwards, and i would like to see someone get knocked out by a pillow, please.

Did they wrap their hands?

I have been reading a bunch of people mentioning the gloves the fighters use in MMA and boxing. Boxers usually use somewhere between 10-14 ounce gloves while the UFC fighters use 4 ounce gloves. I just wanted to clear one thing up real quick.....

A punch will hurt WAAAAY more if you got hit by a boxing glove than a MMA glove.

Fighters wear gloves to protect THEIR hands....not the opponents face. I would rather fight a guy bare fisted, and let me wear the gloves. 3 punches into the fight, if he landed good and I didn't go out, 1) he'd have broken some bone in his hand or 2) feel like he has broken some bone in his hand and will not swing as hard anymore.

The advantage of boxing gloves in NOT in the padding. The hissing sound you hear during a boxing match when a punch is thrown is the fighters breathing when they throw, not the air deflating out of the glove from the cushion. Every trained fighter is taught to breath when he punched so not to tire as fast. Thus the hiss hiss during punches. But also with the bigger glove, it is easier to block and deflect punches in defense.

Just a little info for the masses. Joe Rogan always seem to mention the "4 ounce baby gloves" during every show but he seem to always fail to mention the smaller the glove, the less powerful the impact. None of this applies to "right on the button" punches. A couch pillow can KO someone if hit "on the button". If you would like to try it out, get both types of gloves and let someone hit you in the forehead kinda light like with each. A small punch with a boxing glove will rattle you medulla ablongata.

i have trained anf fought with blth gloves...simple put, YOUR AN IDIOT ! i would gladly let you punch me with boxing gloves if youd let me give you just one good shot to the face with an MMA glove...its a totally different experiance bro. please dotn talk about what you obviously dont know. and btw i dont think anybody on sherdog thought that the "wooshing" sound was the gloves defltating. you are a moron and have no business having posting privelages.

Simple physics mean that this argument is basically dependent on who is throwing the punch. The force of the punch is dependent on the weight of the glove and how fast it is moving when it hits you. Obviously, lighter gloves would move faster but clearly a heavier glove can do as much damage if it moves at a reasonable speed itself.

As far as it being better to be hit with one or the other, the pressure exerted is the force divided by the area. So if the glove is smaller, the pressure will be more than for a punch of the same force thrown in a larger glove. It all depends on the ratios of speed/weight and force/area.

Basically, the glove size and weight isn't as important as who is wearing them. A good boxer can hit just as hard in heavy gloves as a good MMA striker can punch in smaller gloves.

guess you'd feel different if Tyson was standing infront of you and you could pick which gloves he's wearing.
I'd much rather get hit by boxing gloves then mma gloves.
Tyson for example with mma gloves would just wreck people

if by wreck people you mean get taken down by a wrestler and mauled or tapped out by a grappler, then yes.

lets not act like Tyson wouldnt knock you out quick with either gloves anywayz so thats irrelevant

This is true but the post was more about the long term damage done by boxing gloves rather then the short term damage done by mma gloves, I could have used any professional fighter.

Thank you for reminding us how many 15 year olds who have never laced up inhabit this forum. 'Nuff said.

Last week, I was in one of those blown up trampoline houses and we got to box with those HUGE gloves. Those things weighed at least 3 pounds and were several times the size of my head. Since those weigh more than boxing gloves, with some people's logic, shouldn't those gloves knock peoples heads off? I'm surprised I didn't see any dead 5 year old kids.

i fucking knew someone was gonna post about this shit... this kinnna threats r getting too popular...

pretty soon will see: best looking shorts on mma????
favorite/worst haircut on ufc ???
who has the fasestest hands in mma???
mma vs pokemon ...

or some other dumb shit this is getting retarded......

BS, this is why boxers always lobby for larger gloves?? The fact is, many SAC have started using larger gloves for smaller fighters to reduce the impact to the head. The boxers don't like this and prefer using the smaller gloves, usually 12 oz. as opposed to 14 oz.

Thanks for the education?

When he refers to them as 4 oz baby gloves he is saying that because you cant block a punch with them as easily in MMA as you can in Boxing... Fucking listen before you got on a bitch spree.

Physics also dictates that jet fuel (KEROSENE) can't melt steel and that a 110 story building can't pancake collapse in only 10 seconds without the aid of explosives.

But it did!

What is your theory for that Thomas Edison?

1. threadstarter a moron

2. buildings collapse not when heat lowers the ultimate tensile strengths of steel to a collapseable load, but rater when the yield strength point is exceeded. I am a licensed engineer, you are a cook with a tinfoil hat.

This may be one of my favorite threads at displaying who are near retarded IQ levels on this forum

the mma gloves should be as soft as possible without hurting the grappling

A bigger glove means the force is distributed over a larger area (reducing the force per a unit of area) and the momentum transfer takes a longer time since there is more padding to compress (which reduces the net force).

This is why a volley ball player can return a 9.5 oz. ball at 80 mph off his wrist, while a baseball player would have a hard time taking an 80 mph pitch with a 5 oz. ball off the wrist, even though the momentum is only roughly half that of the volleyball.

Mass and Velocity determine the total amount of momentum, but other factors come into play when determining the peak force during deceleration (momentum transfer).
