Opinion Military service should be mandatory

A humorous exchange. That highlights how the terms marxist and liberal are being thrown at everything without a moment's thought about if they apply.

On topic, a year of mandatory civic engagement sounds great but I see how it would ever be allowed constitutionally in the U.S. At least a year of military service can be justified under the public defense. But civil services don't rise to that level.

civil services its a great idea, they also cost way way less than a soldier and there is always something for them to do
unlike the army that can contain people that work once a week (ofc they are not from combat units)

That smacks of communism , the freedom loving thing to do is to force young people into the military .

Being good at Book work and taking tests in highschool doesn’t have much indication of life proficiency and work skills. Most of the students I graduated with and broke as a joke today and or struggling in life.

The US military is largely for bottom feeders. Someone from Encino should not have to spend time with Bubba from Arkansas.

If you need bullet sponges for a war get them from the prisons and jails; same types that wind up in the army.

You'll eventually figure it out.

I did a mandatory military service, some 35 years ago and I didn't mind it when I was young (it was an adventure in my mind), but to be fair, I'm now 52 and with that state of mind I would choose community service or jail.
Being older and having life experience I would never ever choose to join the military, I would spent those 14 months doing some community service or locked up and probably enjoy the time.

I'm thinking that military service should be mandatory and the duties of the military should be expanded.

I've got family in the military and a lot of what, they claim, to do is infrastructure building abroad.

I don't see why that couldn't be expanded to the home front as well. There are tons of infrastructure projects at home that need to be tended to and I don't see why using the military couldn't be used to address that.

It would increase the ability to mobilize large forces to bring about change and provide the GI bill covering education costs to everyone once their duty ends. Provide everyone with good loan opportunities for home ownership and starting a business. It would also put everyone in a position to have skin in the game to prevent the military being used for frivolous wars. Because the general public would be averse to bullshit wars it would allow everyone to unify under a patriotic banner and give people a sense of purpose towards serving their country.

EDIT: ok maybe not the military but a national service. So, national service, military or jail.

Maybe they could build the Pyramids again ?
