Opinion Military service should be mandatory

Yeah, we had gays and lesbians when I served but it wasn't an issue IMO. I was friends with a female 2nd Class Petty Officer who had a smoking hot Marine C-130 pilot girlfriend. They went about the job at hand, were professionals, and let the freak flag fly on their own time and within the confines of military life / regulations. During "don't ask / don't tell" nobody really cared as long as the mission got done.

As time went by we saw more of the individual mentality. The military is a sampling of society so changes are bound to happen. Boot camp is supposed to instill military bearing and discipline to the point that you don't put individuality first. Apparent'y Boot Camp is failing at that and those in leadership roles aren't helping.
Great insights, thanks for sharing.

lol

I'd say that probably 85% of people of age to serve today would die in basic training.

The last thing our military needs is people who don't even want to be there. Our standards would have to lower to accommodate all the snowflake Marxists
This concept applies to school, but we force them there too. I would separate the concept of military careers and mandatory training so that those wanting to be there wouldnt be impeded by those going through the motions of basic. I think a mandatory 1-2 years of training in military should be a general extension of school. The goal for this period would not be to make hardcore soldiers but to teach elements of discipline and teamwork. Those wanting to continue military careers could do as such while the rest head out to the typical public/private sectors.

Defund the military, it's bleeding the country to death.

Yes, during this shitty time it's a great idea to put millions of people out of work.

It's not a binary choice. The money can be spent domestically rather than on some vague foreign mission. Do we really need any troops in places like Germany? Spend that many at home.

The US military is largely for bottom feeders. Someone from Encino should not have to spend time with Bubba from Arkansas.

If you need bullet sponges for a war get them from the prisons and jails; same types that wind up in the army.

Is Encino that great?

close. over 71% arent eligible due to health (mental/physical), not smart enough, criminal history, past drug use, bad credit and debt to income ratio.

conscripting people into military service doesnt work unless all you need are bullet sponges. the military learned from korea and Vietnam, and made changes to pay and entitlements to attract and retain their people. the jobs today are also more technical in nature, so forcing people into technical jobs they dont want to do can damage/destroy equipment, ships, aircraft etc, and kill people.

USAF retired veteran checking in here.

Trust me, you do NOT want people in the military who don't have a desire to be there.

Going to use an old BASIC programming term from my Commodore-64 days..

G.I.G.O.

Garbage In Garbage Out
Exactly! We already have enough assholes who treat the military like welfare. There are a lot of people who truly don’t know what goes on in the military. I was just scratching my head at the poster who called it a death cult. There is literally a job where a guy or girl hands out towels at the gyms on base. I’ve been out for about 6 years so it might be a GS position now but the message stands.

Horseshit.
You never served have you? Most 18 to 25 year old don't even qualify to join the U.S. military.
Too fat, too dumb, criminal record, or drug use. Certainly no security clearance.

I'm thinking that military service should be mandatory and the duties of the military should be expanded.

I've got family in the military and a lot of what, they claim, to do is infrastructure building abroad.

I don't see why that couldn't be expanded to the home front as well. There are tons of infrastructure projects at home that need to be tended to and I don't see why using the military couldn't be used to address that.

It would increase the ability to mobilize large forces to bring about change and provide the GI bill covering education costs to everyone once their duty ends. Provide everyone with good loan opportunities for home ownership and starting a business. It would also put everyone in a position to have skin in the game to prevent the military being used for frivolous wars. Because the general public would be averse to bullshit wars it would allow everyone to unify under a patriotic banner and give people a sense of purpose towards serving their country.

EDIT: ok maybe not the military but a national service. So, national service, military or jail.
The older I get, the more I think this is a good idea.

No. You don't want people serving in the military who do not want to be there (unless it's completely necessary). That is part of the reason Vietnam was such a mess.

Nah. You can go bleed for Trump or whichever other mass murderer is in charge by yourself, soldier boy.

Interesting guy. Went on to get a BA, MBA and PhD.

No way I would join the military. Most people I know who went into the military couldn't cut it in the workforce or post school .

I do know a couple guys who did join because it was tradition. I respect the heck out of them for that.
