I'm thinking that military service should be mandatory and the duties of the military should be expanded.

I've got family in the military and a lot of what, they claim, to do is infrastructure building abroad.

I don't see why that couldn't be expanded to the home front as well. There are tons of infrastructure projects at home that need to be tended to and I don't see why using the military couldn't be used to address that.

It would increase the ability to mobilize large forces to bring about change and provide the GI bill covering education costs to everyone once their duty ends. Provide everyone with good loan opportunities for home ownership and starting a business. It would also put everyone in a position to have skin in the game to prevent the military being used for frivolous wars. Because the general public would be averse to bullshit wars it would allow everyone to unify under a patriotic banner and give people a sense of purpose towards serving their country.

EDIT: ok maybe not the military but a national service. So, national service, military or jail.

I agree, this generation needs to be toughened up a bit and learn what it takes to protect what they have

they take it for granted
thanks brackis, you never fail to disappoint me

this is exactly the kind of nonsense I was referring to
Yeah man I really comported myself poorly here; I defer to your genius.

I couldnt do it. I dont like being told what to do and I wont be broken that way. I also dont want to kill anyone or be killed, especially if it was a conflict I disagreed with. "Enemies" have families and dreams too. TBS, Id be going guerrila against any invasion forces until they killed me.

While I agree with the ability to draft citizens when the need arises, compulsory service generally goes against the idea of freedom of association. So no, we shouldn't make it mandatory.

I think a year (or two) of public service post-high school is a fine idea, but I wouldn't restrict it to the military, and I would tie it to a reward, such as 50% off of tuition to a state school.

Imagine raising children in a society whose dominant message is: give to the community and you will be rewarded... talk about a concept that is totally foreign to our current culture.

only if needed

america really doesnt neither most countries in europe

in here we have it because its the best way to defend ourself if sergei gets drunk again and gets ideas

also its ingrained in our culture so no one complains about it really

It's quite a jump to take someone saying that National Service shouldn't be enforced on everyone to them saying the whole military should be abolished.

“Or you could not join the military and spend on infrastructure projects lol.”
