Microsoft is Buying Activision Blizzard $68.7B ***Update: Acquisition Finalized***

The same company that has ended every generation in last place?
Everyone knows that the 360 was the console of that generation. Everyone knows that MS has innovated faster than Sony. And how many years and millions of consoles as a headstart did they have? Guess we'll see what happens with series x 2 and ps6.

I wonder if maybe MS has a better understanding of what they're getting and why than some random schlub on the internet.

Author's nerd comment was unnecessary but the takeaway was not what was gotten – how rather. Mind that if you would. I'm not in the know on the matter but if I can say something, it would be that I don't think Sony and M/s are playing the same sport and haven't for a while now, leading to disingenuous slights from proponents of either.

M/s going way of ecosystem was foresightful but also in line with company mission statement, wants. Sony went storytelling, arthouse, VR, uniquely and squarely games whereas M/s went how we access those games. As is the nature of things, both companies learn from the other and grow so it's important to remind oneself that binary is a mathematical state, not one ontological or how to say. Both companies deserve credit where due; they're industry juggernauts for good reason and the engineering displayed on either side of the aisle to include peripherals has proven field-forging.

Zooming out right now in road ahead, I'd think M/s akin to Walmart and Sony Trader Joe's, to analogise with two popular American groceries. I've also seen the adage here used quality versus quantity (and that's not to speak pejoratively but rather of market, brand strategies).

My thoughts ATM but am open to disagreement and being educated where amiss. Sorry for length.

That first clip would be true in 2018.. not in 2022 when it's abundantly clear that the culture has changed and Xbox first party as evidenced by last year is finally producing great games.

Anyway, I don't think Colin Moriarty and some random console warrior account from what I can see is the best representative to justify a point..

You don't need to like Colin, but he's right. It's exactly what MS is doing. Sure, Forza, Psychonaughts 2, Deathloop and Halo we well received (Deathloop being a little iffy on the consumer side) but their studios have generally performed poorly and they haven't fostered a way to cultivate consistency like Sony has. Just because they released solid games in 2021 doesn't mean that trend will continue. Playstation has a track record and has historically put out the best exclusives. I think it takes a generation or two for your customers to believe you're on the path to creating sustainable products. I don't see that being true in 1 year with 4 games.

Sadly those things make the money though. There’s no doubt Sony has the more talented studios but casuals eat up stuff like Candy Crush and CoD. Sony should just work on its own military shooter
They already are, brother; production updates for which to be announced. Deviation has been dedicated solely to the very thing – exclusive AAA shooter property.

The 360 was obliterated by the Wii and ended up being passed by the PS3 once the cost of entry wasn’t so high.

What innovation are you talking about specifically?

They’re still outselling Microsoft at a near 2:1 rate in the first year of this gen.

This meme is evergreen lol

Lmfao ouch.
I hate shitty titles like that with no context. Stock Market has been taking a hampering this past weeks, and MS dropped 3% with the announcement and Sony dropped 11%.

These swings are not that big of a deal, and they'll pop back up with the recovery of the market.

LMFAO how appropriate you would post a salty Playstation fanboy meme like this. Only a Playstation fanboy would make it.

The Nintendo Switch has outsold the PS5, PS4 Pro, and PS4 combined by a far greater margin than the PS5 has outsold the Xbox Series X/S since the PS5 launched despite that the Switch released in 2017.

And how appropriate it would trigger you lmao. It’s been around for years, dork.

The Switch is a juggernaut. Xbox is constantly coming in last. Not sure what you’re trying to accomplish here outside of demonstrating your hurt feelings.

I guess you have nothing to worry about. But here you are fanboying it up. Save your money and you too can have an x.

Overall I’m not pleased with this development, but focusing on some potential (if unlikely) positive developments would be to see the revival of some of the dormant IPs that ID Software and Raven Software collaborated on back in the day like Heretic/Hexen franchise or a continuation of the Quake 2/4 “Strogg War” series now that they’re under the same roof again. Hell, it would be just plain nice to see Raven get out of the Call of Duty support team “coal mines” for a little while. I hope that’s a possibility under Microsoft/Spencer’s stewardship.

This is said well here if you wait out the opening remarks: (time to watch only 2m)

Consider also below for perspective in differentiating the approaches between Sony and M/s. Not wanting to stoke and sputter but it's put poignantly, IMO:

For the tweet part, M$ is buying IP's/studios that are guaranteed to deliver big $$ for them, while giving them tons of more consistent content on Gamepass. I personally don't love Gamepass, for the same reasons I don't love Netflix, I don't feel ownership. Lots of titles leave too. I like to bounce around games, so if I were to pay for a subscription, it's nice to know I can take my time with more titles.

Colin is on the money though with homegrown studios. It's not a strong suit for Xbox, regardless of examples to the contrary (Forza, Bungie Halo, Gears etc..)

People like to shit on Halo, and 343 deserves a lot of criticism. I don't know who was responsible for their outsourcing so much work, but you can feel how disjointed the game can feel (campaign). I personally love it, however, as the gameplay is amazing, and I'm enjoying the story, especially the lore behind the Ring, but it feels like a couple of games mashed into one. It's fun to have different objectives on the ring and get rewards for exploration, but there is no impact to the story overall, it's just busy work. I'm not quite finished it yet, so i'll reserve final judgment.

Phil Spencer seems to have the right vision though. If he and the suits can let dev teams create, and just be a guiding hand towards completion without too much oversight, while giving them financial security, then maybe we won't see a repeat of what happened to franchises like Fable. Xbox is a far different company than it was 7 years ago, so I'm optimistic they'll help their teams bring out some gems, rather than force them to deliver mediocre cash grabs. Having Gamepass as a constant revenue stream will let them take losses on more experimental titles. Having M$ as the ultimate financial backer gives the company plenty of breathing room too.

Ultimately, Xbox gobbling up so many studios is a bad thing for the Industry. As much as I hate EA, and Take Two, I don't want anyone owning them and restricting beloved cross-plat IP's. Having one monolith overseer is never a good thing. There are so many red flags already. Spencer wanting to ban players across platforms for "bad behaviour". Their woke insertion into word is a joke. Are people going to start getting banned because they don't want to use insane pronouns? I'm sure it won't be that bad, but giving one entity so much power is never works out better than a more decentralized approach.

One of the beauties of this industry is the low barrier to entry. Should things go south at Xbox, there are many viable ways for developers to form independent ventures. One of the games I'm most excited to see is Wayward Realms, made up of former Bethesda/Daggerall creatives.

Sony is going to be fine so long as their studios continue delivering high quality games. I'd much rather have quality over quantity. I'm sure this will encourage them to do even better, and bring more titles to PC. They have to be loving their sales on Steam alone. Where's my fucking Bloodborne PC idiots!!

They already are, brother; production updates for which to be announced. Deviation has been dedicated solely to the very thing – exclusive AAA shooter property.
An exclusive fps might not be the best idea imo, for multiplayer you want as large a player base as you can get. At least having it on PC as well will be good.

This could prove to be a big problem for Sony as they have not been great at

But there is reasons for concern for Sony because recently they been talking on an off about building cars and tons of other things without moving forward. It seems like they cannot pull the trigger on anything but look to see how people will react. Microsoft has had good success with their investments such as linkedin and people questioned what are they going to do with a social media platform for jobs and they intergrated Linkedin within office applications and hiring managers loved the idea. GamePass showed up as an install option with my new laptop.

Their game platform has been growing their Microsoft azure platform unlike others like Epic, NetFlix, Hulu, Disney they don't need Amazon cloud apps. and can expand the profits in that area and also nevermind the hated cryptocurrency connection and metaverse or whatever Epic entry in the Steam like space there is a ton of reason why there should be concerned. Sony seems be losing out but optioned to forester their own gaming.

The meme says "Switch". At no point since the Switch's release has the Playstation ever been #1 in sales.

PS has always been a good performer for Sony, so I guess bad news for PS means people jump ship, but I think its just algos and hedgefunds that are manipulating the market since the drops and gains are in afterhours, where retail [or most of retail] cant trade.

Ofcourse MS dwarfs them but thats not the point. MS is a trillion dollar company so ofcourse theyve got other areas that generate huge cash flow. The point is that MS cant forester good games in house, and resorted to just buying content. Thats bad for the consumer in the long term. Good for Gamepass tho.

I thought in dollar cost terms that the PS was leading. Im sure if the shortage wasnt happening PS5 would be reigning. Ofcourse units moved would be much more for the switch since its sells for half or even a third of the PS5.

And the meme is clearly about Xbox. Anything you need to deflect from that bronze status, champ. Lol
