Manti Te

the deadspin article jumped to conclusion and didn't fact check enough. Ironically, just as they did with the story to begin with.

There's no evidence that their friendship was greater than just tweets, not ONE photo of them being together or any evidence of them have associations outside of a few tweets.

This is a classic case of the first hasty article defining the entire narrative. People are too lazy to do any investigation of their own and just going by secondary reporting.

people keep ignoring the facts that there have been multiple people in "relationship' with Kekua outside of Manti Teo. So was teo scamming other people too?

Dude, that first "hasty" article was the ONLY one that ever fact checked a single thing. That's why we're in this whole mess...all the mainstream sites took this guy at his word and didn't even bother to google the girl's name or look for a death notice! CBS, ESPN, etc, all reported this girl's death as news, and she didn't even exist! Talk about shit media.

I'm not saying we have to take every word of the deadspin article as gospel, but that was the first and only article regarding this girl that was not hasty and naive - they dug like crazy to try and make all these connections and put together a timeline. Now everybody is scrambling and putting together more hasty articles...that first deadspin one was the only one that anybody took their time on - nobody else was going after that story so they had time.

God I would love it if the internet started vetting their stories. I'm not sure such a change can be effected, tho, but can you imagine websites being held accountable for fact-checking? IS SUCH A THING POSSIBLE? AM I TAKING CRAZY PILLS!?

look the article deadspin put out was written with the presumption that Teo was behind the manufacturing of the hoax when the evidence did not convincinly conclude it was that way at all. And because that was the first article it has shaped the tenor of the public discourse on this topic. This is not to invalidate their reporting of the news but it was hasty. ESPN had the story for about a week before it came out and was taking their time in verifying everything.

Lol

Why do so many of you want him to be gay?

He's a mormon at a catholic university and he had a pretend girlfriend, even though he is a national celebrity and the BMOC at Notre Dame. Is it really that surprising that people think he might be gay, especially when many assume he's behind the whole hoax?

Te'o should step up and answer questions because people are going to speculate forever. He should admit that he got duped and tried to cover it up by lying in hopes that it wouldn't come out before the draft.

He could admit to being gay, if it's true, and get a ton of sympathy but that would hurt his NFL chances.

This could honestly be a watershed moment in journalism. The main stream media has a TON of egg on their face, all due to some alternative online news source like Deadspin. I don't know if good or bad or what the ramifications, but I think we're in the midst of something rather important.

Yeah nothing about any of this story makes him seem gay.

People see a Morman football player at a Catholic school and they want him to be gay.

You're right they did take that angle - that he was behind it from the beginning. More responsibly, they should have laid out the story and given more than one theory, but they felt like they had enough evidence to support their position and it's not the Deadspin way to not take a side on something.

Either way, I think they served an important role in this whole thing. God know who would have greased ESPN to write what by the time they got their story out...ND has a lot on influence in the sports world and they easily could have blackmailed ESPN to present the story the way they wanted it.

Having a girlfriend that doesn't actually exist is a very real way that people attempt to hide being gay. Add in the fact that people believe he perpetrated the hoax himself and thus must have a motive, and it's a pretty easy thread to connect.

killing her off with cancer and parading it around doesn't make sense if he was hiding something

No.

People who want to hide being gay have a real girlfriend, or a fake girlfriend to whom they don't bring attention.

Not a fake girlfriend whose fake death they parade through the media.

Really? Te'o was moving on from college and would be fully expected to be seen with his girlfriend (i.e. at the draft or at team functions). And what better way to cover up the fact that you are an NFL player with no girlfriend than to say that you are still grieving from the loss of the love of your life?

I'm not saying he's gay but tons of people are jumping to the conclusion and it's not simply because of their bias.

Like he would have to cover up that he doesn't have a GF going to the NFL.

If he was gay, why wouldn't he feel the need to cover up the fact that he's never seen with a girl? Are you under the impression that all NFL players and front office guys are accepting of gay players?

\Even to this day, there are NFL players that are openly anti-gay. Several months after one of the greatest plays in Super Bowl history, David Tyree said he'd trade his Super Bowl victory to keep gay marriage illegal.

Matt Birk, center for the Ravens, was very vocal about his support of legislation in MN to ban gay marriage.

Tank Carder called someone a *** on twitter and then said that he didn't agree with being gay.

It would be naive to think that gay NFL players don't feel the need to hide their homosexuality.
