The only narrative that somewhat pieces this mess together is that Manti is a closet homosexual. In a hyper macho environment like a Catholic Division 1 football team he needed a cover to explain why he wouldn't interact with females in the same way his teammates did. Instead of pulling some religious abstinence nonsense (since nobody follows that crap anyway Catholics or Mormons) he invented a distant girlfriend whom he had to stay faithful to. Now his teammates would commend him for being true to her and immediately understand his abnormal behavior.

I can see his logic behind the "prank gone out of control" theory. Basically, he was genuinely duped by this Ronaiah Tuiasosopo guy. He later learned it was a hoax, but had already blabbed to friends and teamates about his girlfriend, so he was too ashamed to admit it and just kept the lie going. With his fame increasing and a potential Heisman, him and Tuiasosopo made the dumb choice of fixing the lie by killing her off w/ this dramatic luekemia/car crash story.

Apparently Tuiasosopo has admitted to his role in the hoax. Even better - he auditioned for one of those horrible singing shows and lied about some dramatic car crash he survived hoping for the judges sympathy. mmmm.....

I'm Polynesian bro. Thought the deadspin article referenced their friendship being greater than tweets. Im just saying I'm very skeptical that Manti didn't know until December.

the deadspin article jumped to conclusion and didn't fact check enough. Ironically, just as they did with the story to begin with.

There's no evidence that their friendship was greater than just tweets, not ONE photo of them being together or any evidence of them have associations outside of a few tweets.

This is a classic case of the first hasty article defining the entire narrative. People are too lazy to do any investigation of their own and just going by secondary reporting.

people keep ignoring the facts that there have been multiple people in "relationship' with Kekua outside of Manti Teo. So was teo scamming other people too?

J.R. Vaosa, 28, of Torrance, Calif., and Celeste Tuioti-Mariner, 21, of Whittier, Calif., said that in 2008 their cousin began an online romance with a woman who portrayed herself as a model. "I just knew that my cousin would invite her to certain events and Lennay would always say she would go to those things, but she would never end up going and instead of her going we would see Ronaiah," Tuioti-Mariner said.

Then this fall, Vaosa and Tuioti-Mariner saw the story of Te'o's dying girlfriend.

"When I found out about the Samoan football player (and) his girlfriend, his Grandma died the same day, I was like, 'Whoa this is crazy,' I feel so bad for him, so I just looked him up," Vaosa said. "I found out his girlfriend's name was Lennay Kekua. And right when I read the name Lennay Kekua, I immediately thought of Ronaiah. Then I thought of my cousin -- that this has to be the same person."
