You're right they did take that angle - that he was behind it from the beginning. More responsibly, they should have laid out the story and given more than one theory, but they felt like they had enough evidence to support their position and it's not the Deadspin way to not take a side on something.
Either way, I think they served an important role in this whole thing. God know who would have greased ESPN to write what by the time they got their story out...ND has a lot on influence in the sports world and they easily could have blackmailed ESPN to present the story the way they wanted it.
That's fair, I don't think we have much disagreement.
I just have a problem with this incredulity people have about a guy meeting and getting into a relationship with someone online. It reeks of a generational divide.
And if you look at what Teo's real comments have been. Initially he just referred to her as a close friends and it eventually evolved into girlfriend/love of his life.
When someone dies, at a funeral there will be many people stating that they were the deceased's best friend or really closed to the departed, even if their relationship really was much more plain. That's because we grieve by magnifying the importance of the dead. So if Teo was duped then it is very believable he startred investing MORE into the relationship after believing she was dead.
People's incredulity to these sentiments show a lot of ignorance and lack of psychological insight imo.
