Notes: I felt completely drained today. I think it has to do with my sleeping not going well. I tried to drink some coffee preworkout for some energy, but I'm not sure that worked. Not a good workout day, but at least I needed to get my ass in there.

Running
-3 miles @ 30min pace. My legs are pretty sore, but I think I deserve it the way I have been training squats. Good news is that running on my toes has made my knee pain go away. Amazing what the little things will do.

Notes: Gotta recover from the leg soreness tonight. Gonna try this ice bath deal so I can check out this Judo place tomorrow. I plan on picking up Judo if I can find a place when I get back from the emerald isle. Luckily this place is 15 minutes from my college campus/apartment so I hope it's good and affordable.

Checked out a judo place, it wasn't very good. Not many students and the instruction didn't seem very good... but I guess that's some cardio for yesterday. Gonna try a different Judo place in Atlanta on Tuesday. It's another 20 minutes to drive there, but it seems really good based on their website.

Running
-3 miles @ 27:24 min pace, was able to run the first half on my toes... after that I switched between the way I usually run and on my toes.

Hey man, what footwear are you using when you run on your toes. I am a 'barefoot' running convert and use these:

As for the knee pain issue I have seen several studies linking barefoot running to reduced effects on things such as patella tendonitis!

I am interested in this barefoot running thing. Did you have any training injuries from running before you switched? Have you noticed a different since you switch? I think there is a book out called Born to Run or something about it right?

I currently run in Mizuno Wave Rider 13s, but the knee problem occured before I got them. I was running in shoes that may have been already destroyed since I trained and ran in a half marathon in them.

*shakes ass*

*runs*

You jerk! How goes the lifting?

Sledge Hammer Levering (last night)
-Side to side lever, hellicopter clockwise/counterclockwise, and forward lever.

Notes: Forgot to log this one last night. Going to start doing these and towel pull ups on my off days since apparently running is becoming somewhat damaging to do on my rest days.

Yes I did. I had patella tendonitis (runners knee) due to a quad imbalance as a result of a ruptured Lateral collateral Ligament.

I put up with it for months. Since switching to Vibrams (I've only ran in them like 8/9 times) my patella tendonitis is almost completely gone!

Yes Born to run is a cool book, I never got to read all of it (it was a friends) but the basic principles are out there on the net anyway!

Jiu Jitsu
-Two hours worth, working back escapes and some rolling. Checking out the judo place tomorrow, I have a good feeling about this one!

Did it take you time to get used to it? It seems like running with shoes that have a lot of cushioning and then switching to ones that don't make take a toll on you if you use the same intensity.

Yes it did, in fact still does. However, I have now ran the same 5 mile run that I used to in my Nike Lunarglides.

The Calf pain was the only thing that was getting me. Now, even after the 5 miler I have very little DOMS in the lower limb. Obviously you can't just jump in at the deep end and run the same distances, as you have to condition you muscles for it.

I'd say the key to getting used to it if you decided to check this route out would be to run small distances ever day or at least every other day. I mean short too. Like just a mile or 2, once the DOMS goes away then start upping the distance.

Honestly, I don't think I could go back to conventional running now. I really like this barefoot thing. I used to hate running and now I actually look forward to it!

Judo
-1 hour, worked on a couple throws. This place was better than the other one I went to, but really it just made me want to go back to BJJ. I'm thinking about checking out the alliance gym tomorrow at noon and see what their BJJ is like and then doing a Judo class at 7pm to see if it'll get any better. Both gyms take 30 minutes to drive to, but I suspect I will have more fun doing BJJ.

How often are you running now?

Judo
-1 hour, worked on osoto-gari and some hip toss called ogoshi or something. Also worked on some judo sidecontrol escapes. Gonna try to check out alliance BJJ tomorrow since my body was too beat to do it this morning.

How do you like you're new judo school?

There are a couple things I like about it. The head instructor is a really cool guy, he doesn't mess around with contracts, and it appears to be the only Judo place in Georgia that has a fair amount of members. I get the feeling this place isn't very competitive though. I went to two classes so far and there has been no sparring or live drilling. It makes me want to go back to BJJ since it's a little more exciting, but I will most likely be doing a class every once in a while with this gym or train it more to prepare for a compeitition.

BJJ
-1h30 at Alliance BJJ place. You could see the skill of everyone's top game there. I faired pretty well against my first partner. We drilled open guard sweeps for awhile and then went to live drilling with our partners. My first partner was about 40 lbs heavier than me and a blue belt. In the beginning he got me a lot even when I started with the dominant position (we started halfway set up for an open guard sweep). I started catching onto his patterns and actually got mount off of a sweep and the back off of a another, majority of the time we got in a neutral position or the guy starting the sweep won. Next we go to rolling, my first opponent was a white belt like myself, but DAMN was he good. He had me on the defense the entire fucking match, it was crazy. He dominated me more than my next two opponents who were blue belts! So after getting grinded out for 15 minutes straight I had a headache and staggered back to my car and drove home. I am currently setting up an ice bath because tonight I plan on drilling some no-gi judo throws with my homeboy who has a wrestling mat.

tl/dr - drilled open guard sweep, live drilling of sweep, 3 X 5min rounds of rolling.

Edit: Late night Judo

Judo
-1 hour, I think I have the uchi-mata from the wizzer down now, that's what I wanted to work on. Worked on some chain sequences. Cut it somewhat shorter than expected. I'm just beat and all of the stinging from the gi-burn made me frustrated. Going to savannah tomorrow for the weekend and gonna relax.

Yeah it sucks when they don't let you spar. I studied martial arts before and our instructor didn't let us spar until we reach the senior level. Do you plan to stop bjj or you'll be doing them both? Looks like you're really making it up for doing less running.

Yeah, maybe that's what is going on? I don't really know how Judo is with the sparing. My plan is to sign up with Alliance BJJ after I get back from Ireland since I am currently gymless. Hopefully I can afford it... I don't have a job and I'm a college student so I might need to see if I can get some parental sponsorships. Hah thanks, I love exercising and if I just sit around I go crazy!
