I use an ice fishing rod/reel. I go after Jonny Darters and use a Mustad 2/0 hook, about the size of a quarter. I fish a lot of small fingers that branch off of main rivers.
Now is the time of year to do it, a lot of fish are in their breeding colors right now. A lot of species, like shiners, look drab most of the year but really change during breeding season.
For example, a rainbow shiner most of the year

do you catch them for bait or fry them or what
Hello sherbros. Recently I have decided to take up fishing. Mostly bass. But have no issue going fo others.
Yesterday was my 1st attempt at using a drop shot rig. Interesting set up.
So far I have tried lipped crankbaits, spinners, chatter baits, soft plastics, senkos, creature baits, and so on.
I am trying to learn lure fishing. So knowing I am a complete newbie to fishing other than gojng out as a kid with my dad.
What do you guys advise for muddy water? what do you use for clear water? And what techniques do you suggest for the lures you reccomend?
Same. Went earlier this spring and caught some nice crappie. Well, shouldn’t say nice. But was nice to get out. I missed opening season walleye. Funny, but I’ve always called them walleye, but here in Ontario, it’s tradition to call them pickerel for some reason. I get laughed at.Bass fishing here isn't open until the end of June. So all the bed fishing talk makes me sad.
I think it depends where in Ontario you are, maybe not lol. I find the terms to be used interchangeablySame. Went earlier this spring and caught some nice crappie. Well, shouldn’t say nice. Yeah. I fish on Georgian bay mostly and they all call it pickerel. Even when I go to parts of kawarthas they say it. They must be more educated out quinte way. I hear walleye out there I think.I
