Kind of makes MMA look bad

Since when the fuck has Luke Fury become the GOAT Boxer? Guy would be luck to make it into Top 15 HW's of all time with his paper thin resume (1 win against an old gunshy Wlad whom he avoided giving the rematch to, & a trilogy with 1 trick pony Wilder) forget about Boxing as a whole

Guy managed to duck a Usyk fight even after Usyk agreed to a ridiculous 70-30 split until Saudi money made the fight happen (& who knows he might announce another "retirement" shortly before the fight happens), has yet to fight Joshua even though that would be a mega event

He needs to do a lot to redeem himself after that stinker

So the current champ who was taken apart in 1 minute with ease by Pereira was a "can".

You have no credibility.
two cans and a gatekeeper, whatever. he wasn't considered top level back then, and no one on planet earth thought izzy was going to give away a fight like that.

There are parallels in other sports as well.

Plenty of guys have been walk-ons for an NCAA team and in three or four years find themselves in the NFL.

Shane Spencer was a geriatric rookie called up from the minors at 26. He hit three grand slams in 10 days that September which would have been an impressive number for a career. Then he picked up a championship ring.

Sometimes things just go really well for an inexperienced athlete.

You guys are still coping from the beating Ngannou gave to your champ? Then, you must still be hurting pretty bad, little man.

Anyway, nobody in MMA ever says that. Lesnar became the champ with a 2-1 record. In MMA a white belt can knock out a black belt in BJJ. That's the beauty of the sport. This is not new.

On the other hand, it's you "boxing fans" the ones that say that about boxing. How the elite there are so special that nobody from outside could beat them. There is a common saying in boxing that "you need to start boxing as a kid if you want to reach the top in boxing" because of how "competitive" it supposedly is

I'm sorry your sport lost that mistique after Ngannou exposed that to be bullshit. I know you are hurting for it and angry at MMA because of it but at some point you guys needed to open your eyes.

Boxing is a niche sport. Just like MMA. This ain't the 70's anymore. Boxing is shallow as fuck these days. Deal with it.

Yeah "whatever" he says. That's your response to being called out for your keyboard warrior stupidity.

And now doubling up by implying it was a fixed fight, all so that your "can" depiction of Sean Strickland doesn't make you look worse than it already did.

I bet you secretly forgot Pereira recently beat Strickland didn't you? That's how much you know what you're talking about.

It was pretty embarrassing for boxing when their HW champ just had a split decision with an MMA fighter who'd never boxed before, and the GOAT boxer took some damage, lost rounds and needed 10 rounds against another MMA fighter who'd never boxed before.

The same way boxers always called their sport "the sweet science" and were convinced it takes years of dedication to get good at, MMA fans like to pretend MMA is too difficult to cross over and you'd get exposed if you were "1 dimensional". Nope, turns out it doesn't take much time at all for someone who's big and athletic to cancel out your years of training.

Lesnar showed up from WWE in his 30s with no MMA background and just a collegiate wrestling career 8 years before, and was champ within 8 months of his UFC debut.

Around the same time, Jon Jones had no MMA training and just had junior college wrestling before failing out and living in his GF's parents' basement, and turned pro about the same time he started training and was in the UFC within 4 months beating a bunch of veterans and becoming champ.

Cro Cop was a pro kickboxer just from kicking a heavy bag in his garage, then turned pro in MMA and was a top guy in no time.

Adesanya was a kickboxer who wasn't even the best at that, and didn't even train any grappling until he was already a pro.

Pereira had a kickboxing career until his mid 30s and just came over with no wrestling matches or grappling competitions and has won belts in 2 divisions within 10 fights.
Um, they all had a form of martial arts training. As it's mixed martial arts, they already had some training. and actually Brock was a specialist in one and Izzy in another.
What hasn't happened is a boxer come to MMA with success.

It means that Kickboxing is a great martial art. It is proven in the laboratory of martial arts known as MMA.

Yes, I agree with you. The sport has been declining for decades and right now it's an absolute joke and TS is mad at Ngannou and MMA because of it but it's not their fault. Did you know that there were more boxers registered in New York in 1925 that in the entire world in 2005? Boxing used to be really big, now it's not. All those quotes of the sport being competitive were made back then because they were true. But now, boxing is a joke. A 0-0 MMA fighter just beat the shit out of their champ. Boxing fans are coping however they can :(

Anyone that has been training in something for 10+ years is considered a master of said art.
Pereira has been training in kickboxing for 14 years and grappling for 8 years... this guy didn't start training yesterday.

Alex's has done a great job and I don't want to knock him. It is also true though that LHW is incredibly weak, and this is more of a sign of that than anything. Anytime LHW had a top grappler, Alex would not have been the champ.

This. The original intent of the UFC was to determine the best fighting style. Well, it was really the Gracie's seeking to prove that BJJ was the best fighting style but I digress. What has been proven over time is that there is no best style. We've seen great fighters from a variety of different disciplines. But it has been proven that if you're woefully deficient in any particular area you're gonna have a hard time.

If you pay attention champions typically go in cycles.
The grappler will be champ. He'll lose to a well rounded generalist eventually. That generalist loses to a specialist, I.E a kickboxer. That kickboxer then loses to an elite grappler. The cycle continues.

yes indeed, a hundred years ago boxing was the premier sport, the most prestigious athletes were boxers. the most physically gifted and athletic men of the time were boxing, not to mention tough as nails

so much has changed

I'm the one who said boxing isn't a real sport, dummy.

Combat sports in general are pretty low skill spectacles. You're not watching some incredible display of skill, you're just watching a couple guys who work out give each other brain damage for money, so MMA fans should get off their high horse and stop pretending they're so far above powerslap. YOU are the one who's incredibly defensive trying to convince yourself that it isn't just a tough man contest.

Brock wasn't like some Olympic gold medalist, he was a college wrestler, and it was 8 years before, with no striking or submission training.

You can give the greatest athlete in the world all the steroids you want and have him train 5 hours every day for 2 years straight and then play Djokovic and he wouldn't win a game. Hell, he could play #900 and would get embarrassed. Do the same thing with the same guy in boxing, kickboxing or MMA, and he's world champ in half that time.

A 48 year old retired boxer came over and KO'd a recent champ.
