Keyboard Jockey Attempts Two AR-15 Builds

I don't like that usage of red, but I see homie went with a fluted barrel.

I REALLY dig the handguard you linked. You're good at this. $225 ain't so awesome though, compared to the $50 tube. I was strongly considering something custom from this place. I see their site is down so I hope they didn't go belly-up. I couldn't come up with anything inspiring and none of the existing creations felt quite right.

Although I might have to pick this up. I considered it for Bones but I thought the skulls might clash. lol

You're right. I should go skeletonized for the trigger. Time to research those.

Yeah I'm not a fan of the red but in white I could definitely dig it. Yeah unfortunately most handguards seem to be pricy. I would maybe check midway or Brownells and just for others. I know there are quite a few like that.

I've read about and seen those custom handguards. No idea on those prices though.

I know the Skelton Timney is good. I've read good things about the elf triggers but I don't have any experience.

I agree that those skulls would probably clash/be too much for that lower.

I'm over here trying to build a utility .308 gun and Cubo is over here building a toy looking thing.

Haha beauty of the AR platform imo. Fun guns, huntings, utility, match grade or a mix of everything. Massive amount of options available.

There's something about that exact handguard you posted that appeals to me. I might have to buy it.

Those uniqueAR handguards were about $300. The idea of creating my own pattern is alluring. Of the existing patterns I thought this would be cool for the Spike's.

This one (conceptually) seems perfect for Bare Bones but not quite grabbing me.

The one most tempting though is this one. I could see it looking really tough in white.

This one would be awesome (minus the stars) but I'd need to be the only dude who had one. :)

I like the Timney. Not sure how I feel about the straight triggers.

Sounds like an awesome way to be arrested

Not sure what would be awesome about getting arrested, but first I'd think it would need to be designated a crime.

What's your beef here my man? Other than the lower receiver it's all standard stuff. You got something against skulls?

Lol no beef, I just know that some people would FREAK if they saw a gun have safety orange on the tip ALA BB guns and then it shoots real ammo.

I meant about the "toy" comment. I'm not painting shit orange.

I was just busting your chops for picking on my tastes. :(

LOL.

My tastes admittedly can be a bit goofy too. Like, I actually LIKE the non-flip up canted iron sights when running an optic.

Spike's made a spider Web one.

I was actually thinking about a hand pointing like that. Seemed like a significantly better idea conceptually vs the actual execution now that I saw that. I agree doesn't quite do it for me.

I agree about that one I posted, love the pattern of it. The one you posted would look good as well. Fluted barrel fore end white.

I kinda like those, but they just made no sense for my purposes. Instead I put my optic on a QD mount and called it good.

Hmmmm. The uniqueAR version I find superior to the Spike's.

Yeah, the one with the oval cutouts has a gothic feel that would go well with a skull. I probably wouldn't even go fluted with it. Might make it too busy.

One thing gnawing at me is the new Franklin Armory binary trigger. You familiar? Pricey as fuck, but totally bad ass. At least it does something special, unlike that Tac-Con job. That trigger on the Jack lower in 6.8 would make for an unusual weapon. Doing double taps looking through the ACOG sounds like a grand ol' time.

As a general note, at least for me, lowers are so easy to make decisions on but uppers not so much.

In addition to the AR-10 I intend to make a home defense/shtf ar with the Spikes Punisher lower and a VLTOR or Noveske upper

I agree the one I posted or the ovals would look great.

I have read about the binary trigger. A big fear is the atf doing a 180 on it like they did the with shouldering the Sig brace. I'm kind of shocked they got the okay tbh. The other thing I've seen in videos is that it takes some practice to not pull the trigger too fast and get a good rhythm. It is obviously unparalleled for 2 round burst shots. I'd definitely like to try it before shelling out $400.

Debating irons on my AR 10 actually... It's gonna have a Vortex Viper on it of some type and I want to hunt with it.... Do I NEED irons?

No.

If you need to shoot something close/charging you would likely be instinct shooting with or without irons anyway. Just turn the rifle 45 degrees, look down the rail and start blasting. Practice it at a range.

I might have to go that route because doubling up on the same style tube is messing with my sense of propriety. :) And the Spike's is definitely getting the tube/can look. I consider it a tribute to my love of the two-stage suppressor look.

I hear your ATF fear (on the binary trigger) and raise you a "I don't fuck around when it comes to gun laws". Among what I've read is that this type of thing is not new and when you look at definitions the about-face wouldn't hold much water in court. The SIG brace however, to me, has always seemed like bullshit. lol. I'm no lawyer. Calling Dr. Bombay...o_O... @alanb

As far as timing the trigger goes, I've been watching this thread ( https://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_118...Armory___Update_testing_underway.html&page=79 )and it seems like one could tweak the overall set-up into shape. Maybe not mag-dump after mag-dump, but as you say, the two round burst action could be spectacular. What's $400? Entertaining your wife and another couple in LA or NY on a Saturday night?

Yeah and realistically the 2 round would be better than mag dumps anyway. Maybe get a good cheap dedicated lower for it to mess with. I've heard the semi auto trigger pull and reset isn't the greatest. Maybe that changed or is fixable. If the legality had a rock solid atf response and semi mode was tits it would be an easier decision to make as far as getting it. I'll check that link later.
