Keyboard Jockey Attempts Two AR-15 Builds

I guess I should do more piston research, but I like them well enough in the REC7 and the Sig SWAT. What makes them less accurate?

The piston is moving and slamming back and forth vibrating the barrel. Added weight on the barrel, etc.

How much that all (gas vs piston AR) actually effects the majority of shooting and shooters I'm not too sure.

I've heard it mostly explained as being noticeable on precision shooting.

Basically this. When you are precision shooting, be it standing, bench or prone you can feel that piston moving.

If you are just blasting away you don't feel it as much but the rifle does move more.

I noticed it while trying to do somewhat quick follow up shots as well.

Alright. Screw the piston. I think I'll still shop for an adjustable gas block. My theory there is basically "Why wouldn't you want to be able to adjust it?".

If there is any range around you that you can rent or try a quality piston AR go for it.

Barrett not quality enough?

Plenty good, thought yours was 6.8?

I was going to say bring a DI AR and then fire one of those pistons to see if you notice or if it affects you.

If you just bought an upper and didn't like it for that build you could always save it for another or sell it. You could be dishonest and say the upper is unfired as long as there is no we. Put a couple thick pieces of tape on the brass deflector and run it wet then douche it factory clean. I wouldn't really consider it that dishonest if you sold something with 50ish rounds as new.

My REC7 is 6.8. I'm going to go 6.8 on the Jack.

Lol. I like the way you think. My main goals though are to make something I'm excited about and to learn while I build. My buddy has this attitude of making everything the same (for ergo's and ammo), but I like experimenting. I'm starting to see uppers as the best thing to tinker with because you don't have to ffl/register anything even though with the same lower it's an entirely different tool.

Right now I'm looking at building at least three uppers so...

Yeah...I'm wishy-washy and easily confused.

Oh ok lol well if you like the rec7 I say go for it.

LWRC makes some nice "SIX8" uppers. 14.7 or 16.1"

There are a few options, here's a link but I'd check gunbroker.

I've been interested in that company. But I've got most of this build already purchased. If it turns out to suck I'll try something else. Mostly now I need to decide piston vs. adjustable gas block and what to cerakote white. The Rainier Avalanche is the intended charging handle (that I've yet to acquire).

This is definitely the gist of what the finished product will be.

Did I mention how much I liked the 15rd. mags for bench-shooting Pretty Penny? Something about that size seems right.

Ahh ok.

Yeah I saw a build similar to what you want theme wise.

Except the entire lower wasn't white, just the skull. I can't find the pic of the entire rifle but here is the lower. It looked pretty cool.

The all white rifle looks cool imo as well.

That's 10 lb. cojones in my book. I thought about trying to selectively whiten the upper but that level of sophistication is way beyond my pay-grade.

Skulls rule. Guns + skulls = totally sweet.

I swapped out the standard forward assist on the Black Rain build because I've never liked the looks of them. I tried to find something more stylish at the time and didn't see anything I preferred. Recently I came across this one and I like it much better. Aesthetically the FA was easily the weak-link. Now it's good.

I probably would have went for something like this because of your barrel and brake. It's titanium, they also have a black titanium as well.

Hmmmmmm. Initially the chrome/gold versions looked a bit gaudy. You've got me reconsidering, thanks. :)

What's funny is having used the JP low mass carrier (with no FA serrations), the FA is merely decorative anyway. It would be sweet to have the option of creating an engraving.

Lightweight fore ends... Fortis, Midwest... Any others?

BTW that is made by northtech defense if you were interested in it.

Erathr3 makes a pretty light M-LOK. 10" rail is 5.6 oz, with barrel nut it's 8.2 oz. 12" rail is 6.4 oz, with barrel nut it's 9oz.

I like Fortis M-LOK rails.

SLR makes a lightweight rail.

I guess just go to a website and click through and see what the weights are.
