Well, I don't know much about karate and don't have a strong opinion about it, that said, what is your definition of a high level competitor in mma, kickboxing, and sub grappling?
Considering him high level was my observation not saying I know much but he was one of the top guys in the northwest region, that sounds high level to me.
He fought Horace Spencer, Cedric Marks, and Ed Herman.

Comp in continental level championship/ cup events with at least some success...

No one is saying that grappling doesn't work. It's just that rolling around on the floor like a baby in a real fight is generally a bad idea.

Let's face it, the Gracies designed a martial that worked really well against people who didn't know what they were doing. They then assembled a tournament consisting mainly of third rate nobodies and washed up hasbeens.

Royce's only notable victory in his whole career was against Ken Shamrock. Rickson, the supposed grand daddy, then went out to Japan to fight pro-wrestlers in fixed fights. When they actually started fighting real people, Sakuraba (a chain smoking, pro-wrestler) kicked all their asses.

Meanwhile, the infomercial has been a great success. People who don't like getting hurt can get a black belt in grappling without any of those nasty high impact throws seen in judo or wrestling. They can also pay twice as much as it costs to do any other martial art for the privilege. Because they've invested so much time and effort into it they have to come onto the internet and get defensive when people point out that it doesn't really work in a street fight.

Sugar Ray Leonard loves him, Paquiao loves him, is the idol of Benny the Jet Urquidez, Bill Wallace has great respect for him, Joe Rogan said Bruce had a great mind for martial arts.. i can continue all day, people who has talking sht about Bruce are just jelaous of him.. like some point karate competitors he knew. The founder of Black Belt Magazine said Bruce was the best he knew, he prefered him over any of those guys, that dude knew everybody in that era

There was in those times a great prospect in the HW Boxing who said he could do nothing to Bruce too

There is a video of Joe Lewis saying that Bruce is the father of Full Contact, that he trained him a bit for Full Contact and that he basically made them get interest in than. Lewis had the first Full Contact fight in America.. the Full Contact people eventually was important for the development of MMA

If I correctly remember Norris had learned some stuff in South Korea ( Korean art with kicks ) and had at least a bit boxed...

according to wikipedia, chuck norris is a black belt under the machados. Bruce lee have zero belts and still choked the sucker out. Chuck norris is a fake martial artist, like a marc laimon or greg jackson
