Eh. Ilia was the FW champ. Fresh off of stoppages of both Volk and Max. He even vacated his belt to not hold up the division. Meanwhile Arman already had his title shot with Islam and pulled out THE DAY OF THE FIGHT. They'll all have to see each other eventually, so probably a mute point. But saying that Topuria is underserving feels like a stretch to me.

Why should a guy who only has one defence at the weight below get a shot at the dominant LW champ just because he can't make weight anymore?

You are too fixated on Ilia and why he can be discredited. You're framing him against the ideal #1 contender and that's not the reality. Look at the LW division. The top contenders have all been the same guys, fighting each other, never dropping too far out of the title picture and all losing to Islam. The one exception is Arman. And like I said, if you want to criticize Topuria for being unproven, extend that criticism to Arman who pulled out of his title shot on the day of the fight.

The guys Ilia finished at FW had decent success fighting the best LWs in the world too. (Volk vs Islam and Max vs DP). I wouldn't be upset if Islam/Arman is the fight that gets made. But I think Ilia is just as deserving as anyone else. That says just as much about the lack of qualified challengers as it does Ilia being elite. That's where the division is right now though.
