Critics' Reviews for JURASSIC WORLD
Rotten Tomatoes: 71% Approval Rating (125 out of 177 critics like it)
Consensus: Jurassic World can't match the original for sheer inventiveness and impact, but it works in its own right as an entertaining -- and visually dazzling -- popcorn thriller.

Jurassic World is a blockbuster of its moment. It’s not deep. There aren’t new lessons to be learned. And the film’s flesh-and-blood actors are basically glamorized extras. But when it comes to serving up a smorgasbord of bloody dino mayhem, it accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do beautifully. And while the new Jurassic World pales next to the awe-inspiring spectacle of the original, it’s easily the franchise’s most thrilling sequel yet.

Director Colin Trevorrow never manages to capture that Spielbergian sense of wonder — could anyone? — but he proves himself a more-than-adequate purveyor of cinematic mayhem. For much of its running time, “Jurassic World” plays like a great theme park ride. In an age of blockbusters that lumber like herbivores, it’s refreshing to see a movie as lean and mean as a velociraptor. “Jurassic World” is frequently silly and self-indulgent, but it works more often than not.

It's not the cynical, cash-in cheesefest you feared. OK, Jurassic World is a little of that. But it's got a wicked streak of subversive attitude that goes by the name of Colin Trevorrow. So does Trevorrow, who recaptures the thrilling spirit of the Spielberg original with fresh provocation: Is bigger always better, or is it an empty, soulless thing ready to bite us on the ass? Jurassic World will scare the hell out of you, and not just for the obvious reasons.

Jurassic World leaves open the door for future installments but, while this is an enjoyable popcorn experience, it works best as a stand-alone follow-up. Trevorrow and his co-screenwriters deserve credit for milking two more worthwhile hours out of the Jurassic Park idea but there's nowhere else for the concept to go. It's played out. For now, there's only Jurassic World, which has taken the fossilized remains of a beloved franchise and given it a new life than many doubtlessly thought impossible.
