The clinch work likely did contribute to it but to start showing fatigue that early is never good. Fury should've known better than to try and out-clinch Ngannou. MMA fighters train it much more regularly and extensively. Boxers do use the collar tie themselves, sometimes even the double collar tie, but they rarely pummel. That's because it's a lot harder to do with big boxing gloves on and a lot of refs nowadays won't let fighters actively work in the clinch. MMA fighters know how to break the clinch and pummel to improve position if necessary. They actively train the Thai clinch/Plum (double collar tie) and with Greco guys. There was a decent amount of clinch work in the Fury fight. That probably contributed to both gassing. Fury is known to have a good gas tank. I know that there are rumours that he didn't train but both Aspinal and Joseph Parker, who were in his camp said he worked hard and looked sharp.
I think Fury gassed because he couldn't lean on Ngannou and instead had to muscle his way into the clinch. Francis used a collar tie/half/full plum to create distance and Fury tried to force his way through it, which undoubtedly sapped his energy. Francis also made sure his hips were back and would often have double overs causing Fury to have to carry his weight. Even though Francis nullified Fury's clinch, he still had to wrestle him and that probably gassed him, too.
AJ isn't much of a clincher. He gasses because he has a tendency to brawl with his opponent on the inside. If he ends up doing that vs Ngannou I don't expect cardio would be the primary concern.
These are crazy sums if true! It will be interesting what will happen to boxing once the Saudis tire of burning money like this. By the way, does anyone know why this is on a Friday? I doubt they’ll get many PPV buys in North America, most people will probably be working.
They've only just started to really burn through money in boxing. I don't see them getting tired of it. Not with the ridiculous budget they have. It's far more than all of the major players' budgets combined. North America isn't the market that they're looking to target with this event. Neither headliner is from there. One is British and the other is a native African/French-Cameroonian.These are crazy sums if true! It will be interesting what will happen to boxing once the Saudis tire of burning money like this. If you look at Fury's body and face at the press conference in London, and during the fight, he trimmed down considerably. And he didn't look in a different shape against Chisora or Whyte. To me, it's coping to claim he did not train, even if he may had an off night. There are rumors that Fury didn't train but we're hearing different things. Yeah, Parker said he trained hard as did Aspinall. However, Martin Bakole just came out and said that Fury totally sandbagged it. Didn't train properly. He's trained with Fury for years. That's the softest I've ever seen him look physically. Joshua has always been much more disciplined and he's known for his superior work ethic. Like Usyk he's always in the gym. I don't see him attempting to outmuscle Ngannou as much as Fury tried because he's not much of a clincher like you noted.
Uh, Fury was almost 10 pounds heavier against Ngannou than he was against Chisora in their third fight. He weighed in at 277.7 lbs for the Ngannou fight and 268 lbs for Chisora. Against Whyte Fury weighed in at 264 lbs. More importantly Fury's body composition appeared much softer than usual. Like he lost a noticeable amount of muscle mass and replaced it with fat.If you look at Fury's body and face at the press conference in London, and during the fight, he trimmed down considerably. I think I read earlier in the week that they are targeting Inoue for a date this year, and are offering upwards of $70 million. That’s insane! Great for him, no doubt, but I do wonder about the long term effects on the sport. If you pay a guy that kind of money, he has no incentive to fight again. After one or two Riyadh seasons, we might not have any stars left at all.Hardly anyone in boxing is affected by Saudi money st the moment, other than the HWs
I don’t think they care about the US or any market. Non of this is about making profitable events as far as I can see
I wonder if Fury is even capable of getting into the shape he needs to be in anymore. Judging by the way he looked last time he needs more than a ten week camp.Uh, Fury was almost 10 pounds heavier against Ngannou than he was against Chisora in their third fight. I never said he didn't train. Neither did Martin Bakole. What he's on record saying recently is that Fury didn't train properly.
“To be honest, I was in Tyson Fury’s camp. If you watch my interview at the event when people are asking me, I was saying I will not be surprised to see Ngannou drop Tyson Fury, because, to be honest, Tyson was not 100 percent focused in the gym. For me, my opinion is the signed contract with Usyk affected his mind for the Ngannou fight," Bakole told IFL TV.
“I’ve never seen Tyson training like that. He was doing four rounds, six rounds in the gym for sparring. Maybe he’s watching this and knows he wasn’t 100 percent focused. That’s not the Tyson Fury I know when he was preparing for [Wladimir] Klitschko, [Derek] Chisora, and Dillian Whyte. This was different.”
Bakole Felt Tyson Fury Didn't Train at His Best For Ngannou Fight
Friday is still a weird day to hold the card. I can’t help but think there’ll be a lot of people not tuning in who would happily watch on a Saturday. For my part, I’ve already booked the day off, but not everyone is like me.They've only just started to really burn through money in boxing. I don't see them getting tired of it. Now waiting for Dana White's army to come and explain that he would have made more money beating Jon Jones and defending his title every 2 months for a year. Obvisously assuming a 1M PPV sells for each fight and including the crypto.com bonus payouts.Could I please fumble that bag?

I think he'll come in shape but really it would've helped him if the fight was pushed back until the Spring. He'll need to be in the best shape of his life. Usyk is known for his phenomenal conditioning. He's able to push the pace if necessary and always surges late in fights, finishes strong.I wonder if Fury is even capable of getting into the shape he needs to be in anymore. Yeah it is a strange day but we've seen big fights before on weekdays. It's just that usually they're held on Saturday. The Saudis aren't looking to maximize profits since that isn't their primary motivation (sportswashing is). This is just another clue. Their last stacked card, Day of Reckoning, was also priced significantly lower than most PPV cards which tend to be much thinner in talent.Friday is still a weird day to hold the card. Saudi’s don’t care about views … they are doing this events for their Riyadh season, for locals and tourists that they want to attract to visit their country … they will “loose” money either way is an investment for their country and show off around the world … they cannot be looked at the other promoters, they have endless money.Friday is still a weird day to hold the card. It’s good in a way - big fights are being made - but it will be sad if we don’t see anymore big stadium shows with 90k fansSaudi’s don’t care about views … they are doing this events for their Riyadh season, for locals and tourists that they want to attract to visit their country … they will “loose” money either way is an investment for their country and show off around the world … they cannot be looked at the other promoters, they have endless money.
Indeed. If they can make money then that's nice but that's not why they're putting on these big events. They have so much money in their Public Investment Fund, an estimated $800 billion in assets, that they're not concerned with taking big financial losses or "breaking even" on events. It's expected that they will take losses. They're looking to displace Vegas and become the new fight capital of the world. None of the other major players in the boxing game could even dream of a plan that big.Saudi’s don’t care about views … they are doing this events for their Riyadh season, for locals and tourists that they want to attract to visit their country … they will “loose” money either way is an investment for their country and show off around the world … they cannot be looked at the other promoters, they have endless money.
Those 90k shows in the uk made far less money than big fights in Vegas … just imagine compared to the Saudis… promoters are salivating with SA at this moment… you never know when this will endIt’s good in a way - big fights are being made - but it will be sad if we don’t see anymore big stadium shows with 90k fans
