The UFC and TKO group dont see it that way. PPVs clearly represent flagship performances and athletes, hence why champions/stars are on it. Free fights are for up and comers or people on their way down.

Gane did lose some shine, but don't fool yourself. Francis had already taken plenty of it by taking him down over and over and showing that glaring weakness in his game. Then he folds vs Jones...and look at his last fight. Gets a ridiculous robbery decision vs Volkov. So yeah, Gane is a good but clearly not great HW. Stipe? Absolutely NOBODY thought the 43 year old version who hadn't fought in 4 years (and was brutally KO'd in that fight) was "a killer". You can't pretend this was 2016 Stipe and have any credibility.
If Aspinall were to lose to Jones but then go back to knocking everyone else out, only utter morons will say "he was never any good".

Nah, because his division is LHW. He so thoroughly ran rough shod over 205 for so long that what's happening now won't smear his legacy much. Even the PED and legal stuff won't when it comes to his fighting career. It will be part of it absolutely when people look back on him, but it won't define him.

At HW, if he ducks Tom...true fans will understand it for what it is. Jones apologists will twist and spin and make excuses why he wouldn't accept the fight. Casuals won't think much about it at all.
