Or as an alternative, Big John will always be the appointed ref for any Jon Jones fight.

That's the "Jon Jones" rule.

Big John was ref in Jones fight. He is all bark and no bite.

I'm happier about the proposed changes to the definition of a grounded opponent. It's a pity the NJ rep is being a bitch about it, though.

Also, upkicks to a "grounded" opponent need to be legalised.

A point could be taken already but the refs just don't do it

This won't change anything unless the refs don't start taking points off

You can't take points for no reason. It's not a foul to have out-stretched fingers. You can take a point for a poke, but not for just pawing with open fingers

Fully support it.

However they also need to be able to overturn results like Faber Rivera.

Rivera was smashing him till Faber took his eye out, then Faber used this win to get a title shot.

Pawing should be punished.

I should not be able to feint eyepokes without penalty.

Yeah, that's exactly what the new proposed rule is for. But it's not a rule yet, so referees can't penalize for they think should be punished

LAS VEGAS — Two potential MMA rules changes with particular interest to fans will be voted on Tuesday by the Association of Boxing Commissions (ABC) body.

The MMA rules and regulations committee presented proposed rule alterations regarding the definition of a grounded fighter and the reduction of eye pokes Monday at the 28th annual ABC Conference here at the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino. Longtime official John McCarthy spoke for the committee.

. . .

With eye pokes a hot topic lately, as well as a dangerous part of MMA, the rules and regulation committee is proposing a rule that states a fighter can be called for a foul if he or she is advancing with fingers extended toward the face of an opponent.

Referees will be instructed to clearly communicate this to fighters, much like the foul for grabbing onto the cage. Fighters will be told to close their fists or point their fingers in the air. A fighter who is warned multiple times can have a point taken — like any other foul — if he or she continues to move forward with fingers outstretched.

More new rules...

Awesome news about the eye pokes. Wish they would allow knees to head of grounded opponent if they are going to change the rules.

That was also discussed. As long as it passes, you'll be able to blast people in the head with knees and kicks unless both hands or both knees are on the ground.

How would this rule affect the Stockton Slap?

Seems like just another way to institutialize racism against the Diaz bros.

You know he'd have a legal team try and get rid of that if they tried to actually dub it that. Defamation of character or some shit like that. But yeah, would be pretty LOLworthy.

we'll still be calling it that even if it's not the official name. let them sue me lol
he got away with it during the fights, at least let this be part of his legacy and future fans know he was dirty and unpunished.

I'm good.

The people bitching don't get that refs don't take points because they can't, because only the actual act of eye poking is illegal. The baiting with pointed fingers currently isn't.

This rule would penalize leading with outstretched fingers, which Jones has taken advantage of. Now, if Big John warns Jones about it, he'll actually be able to do something if this passes.

Wat? No.

"Referees will be instructed to clearly communicate this to fighters, much like the foul for grabbing onto the cage. Fighters will be told to close their fists or point their fingers in the air. A fighter who is warned multiple times can have a point taken — like any other foul"

Oh no, they will warn them like they do for cage grabbing? Yeah, that stopped people for grabbing cage multiple times in a row

So they will warn fighter several time to not go forward with their hands open....like they do today. Refs keep on saying "keep those hands close" all the time and yet fighters just ignore them. I can bet right now they will warn them like 5 times about hands being opened and give them 1-2 eye pokes before actually taking away the point. This is not changing anything. Instant point deduct for every eye poke is the only solution.

And also "if he or she continues to move forward with fingers outstretched"....continues? for how long? what does that even mean? how to define continues? during the whole round? how many minutes fighter has to "continuously move forward" for ref to actually react?

This is stupid and doesn't change anything

Which is similar to BJM. All bark. He warned Jones a million times and Jones just ignored him.

"A fighter who is warned multiple times can have a point taken."

This is a weak wording. Why allow multiple warnings? If you want refs to be consistent, don't make ambiguous rules. Some refs are afraid of taking points, so allowing for multiple warnings is no help.

They should be warned BACKSTAGE and before the fight starts when the two fighters are in the cage.
First eyepoke, and point taken away.
With a fence grab i feel thats more instinctual so warning, then immediate point deduction on a 2nd attempt or further.

Exactly this.
