LAS VEGAS — Two potential MMA rules changes with particular interest to fans will be voted on Tuesday by the Association of Boxing Commissions (ABC) body.

The MMA rules and regulations committee presented proposed rule alterations regarding the definition of a grounded fighter and the reduction of eye pokes Monday at the 28th annual ABC Conference here at the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino. Longtime official John McCarthy spoke for the committee.

    . . .

With eye pokes a hot topic lately, as well as a dangerous part of MMA, the rules and regulation committee is proposing a rule that states a fighter can be called for a foul if he or she is advancing with fingers extended toward the face of an opponent.

Referees will be instructed to clearly communicate this to fighters, much like the foul for grabbing onto the cage. Fighters will be told to close their fists or point their fingers in the air. A fighter who is warned multiple times can have a point taken — like any other foul — if he or she continues to move forward with fingers outstretched.

    More new rules...

A point could be taken already but the refs just don't do it

This won't change anything unless the refs don't start taking points off

You know he'd have a legal team try and get rid of that if they tried to actually dub it that. Defamation of character or some shit like that. But yeah, would be pretty LOLworthy.

TLDR: Big John proposes that a foul or warning should be given if a fighter leads with his fingers forward or strikers with his fingers forward. Essentially taking out the part of the fingers coming in contact with any opponents eye before receiving a warning.

It comes down to the refs and almost none enforce it properly. Even with this minor change a fighter still has an incentive to use one freebie eyepoke.

They should be warned BACKSTAGE and before the fight starts when the two fighters are in the cage.

First eyepoke, and point taken away.

With a fence grab i feel thats more instinctual so warning, then immediate point deduction on a 2nd attempt or further.

Came here to say exactly this. I would also accept the 'Jonathan Dwight Jones rule'.

How is this any different than the current rules? Warn them multiple times? But that is what they are doing now. I don't get it.

Rule needs to be: First eye poke - point takes away. Why? Because fighters already talked to the ref before the fight and clearly heard ref telling them to keep their hands closed. You don't want to keep your hand closed? Fine, then you lose a point. How many times does a grown man/woman needs to hear a rule? Until someone lose an eye. Fuck that. Ref explained you the rules before the fight, you didn't play by the rules - point takes away.

Yes first few months a lot of fighters will lose points but I bet you in 6 months all of them will keep their fucking hands closed at all time knowning they will lose a point if they don't . Now they know there is free 1 or 2 eye pokes before ref reacts and by that time damage is already done. Thats why its happening. They need to punish them and then fighters will stop doing it. Simple at that.

I liked the recent fights BJM was telling fighters to keep their hands closed. I hate the open handed pawing that occurs over and over and starts looking like patty cake.

You don't take a point away for an accidental foul. (If the official rules it an accidental foul, of course.)

I can picture Big John in the ring, holding a fighters wrist after the eye poke, and signaling to the judges, "one point for the Jones Jab"

Refs aren't going to do shit.

Cheating champs will just get away with it.

Especially JJ, b/c she's a girl, she can't hurt no one!!!

Awesome news about the eye pokes. Wish they would allow knees to head of grounded opponent if they are going to change the rules.
