Average annual salary of a janitor in Las Vegas, Nevada - $26,255.*
Salary of a UFC fighter, assuming he isn't a star, and the average of 2 fights per year**:
10K to show per fight = P20K.*
2,500K Reebok payout per fight = P25K.
Interesting data for an employer worth 3.5 billion dollars, according to Dana White himself.
You will never hear of an athlete competing in the NFL, NBA, NHL or MLB needing to work a side job to make ends meet. And yet, despite the UFC bragging about its being worth billions, typical fighters have to take side jobs or even resort to crowdfunding.
In a true free market, people are paid what their work is worth. Supposedly, fighting in the UFC means fighting in the premier league of MMA. It supposedly means that you are one of the best fighters in the world. Do any of you honestly believe that an ordinary janitor is worth more than a fighter in the top league of a global sport?
Why should you, the MMA fan care? If you are a true fan, you want MMA to have better pay, to attract the best athletes in the world so that they can dedicate their lives to the sport.
*Not counting 10K to win as that is entirely contingent, unlike a janitor's guaranteed salary.
** The fighter's time competing inside the cage is not the only time he is working. I can't believe how some people don't get this yet. Training MMA is a year-round endeavor, including grappling, wrestling, striking, conditioning and strength training. Getting ready to fight is a utterly grueling full-time job in itself, that 99% of we lard-asses would wilt under.
*sits back, opens a beer and waits for the UFC corporate shills to show up*
