Report: Henry Cavill was a Pawn in Dwayne Johnson's Failed Attempt to Control a Piece of DC Films

DiZvVnb.jpg

The sunsetting of Henry Cavill’s time as Superman was the clearest indication yet that DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran are mounting a substantial overhaul of DC, a reboot that will cut significant, if not most, ties to the previous regimes that handled DC movies for Warner Bros. Cavill also shot a cameo in The Flash, one of four DC movies set to release in 2023, but sources say that cameo, along with that of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, is now being cut given that the studio chose to not go forward with director Patty Jenkins’ version of Wonder Woman 3.

Cavill found himself in a confluence of different headwinds at the studio. Dwayne Johnson pushed for his return via the much-hyped cameo in Black Adam and a potential linchpin for Johnson’s own DC universe franchise. But Black Adam has grossed $389 million worldwide, its soft performance calling into question Johnson’s much-touted plans for a sequel and an eventual Adam vs. Superman movie even before Gunn’s decision. The studio had its own plan as new film co-chiefs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy wanted to make a Man of Steel sequel, having Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight to write the treatment. (Classic character Brainiac was to have been the villain of that piece, a source says.)

“In the end, he was a pawn in Dwayne’s failed attempt to control a piece of DC,” one insider observers.

Cavill, sources say, did not have a deal in place to return as Superman, only a verbal agreement that the studio would develop future projects. He was paid $250,000 each for his cameos. The actor in recent years had a resurgence thanks to starring in Netflix’s popular fantasy series The Witcher, which saw him earning $1 million per episode. Cavill left the show this fall, although it’s unclear if the promise of more Superman appearances were behind his exit.

Gunn and Safran are well aware of the sensitivities behind axing the popular Justice League cast by Zack Snyder as well as the sensitivities of parting ways with high-profile and popular talent. Forgoing a call to agents or producers, the executives met with Cavill to discuss their plans and seemed to indicate a potential new role down the road. The pair have also made overtures to Ben Affleck, aka Batman, asking him to direct a DC film for them while Jason Momoa — who may be done as Aquaman — has met with the duo as well, possibly about playing a new role.

Cavill has already lined up another franchise, Warhammer 40,000 at Amazon.

As for Gunn, he responded to a fan who accused Warner Bros. and DC of stringing Cavill along to goose Black Adam‘s opening weekend. Said Gunn in a comment on Instagram this week: “Everything with Black Adam happened before I was around.”

On the one hand, it’s a bummer because I thought Cavill was a good Supes and liked the notion of him doing another movie, but, at the end of the day, Gunn and co. have to pave their own way. And if they’ve been entrusted by the studio to do a complete overhaul, then that’s what they’ll do.

Would be cool if Cavill heads to the MCU in some capacity down the line.

I just can't fathom seeing Black Adam bypassing Shazam to go straight to Superman.

Heck, all evidence that Shazam even exists was ignored in Black Adam.

Now that I think about it, with everyone talking about Henry, Gal, Jason, and Ben.... what's the plan moving forward with Zachary Levi?

Reminder for what the entire Justice League story was supposed to be:

Movie was supposed to:

- Start with an invasion of Earth from Apocalypses
- Amazonians, Lanterns, Humans, Atlantians, and Greek gods defeat the invaders.
- Invasion was supposed to be led by Darkseid.
- Steppenwolf uses the invasion to get out from under Darkseid's thumb and stay on earth to become a new god.
- To do this, he gets all three mother boxes.
- The mother boxes represent Fear, Doubt, and Alienation.
- Because the Earth was morning the death of Superman, they became defenseless.
- JL attack Steppenwolf, but lose. That is why Superman was brought back using a mother box.
- JL together kill Steppenwolf, Wonder Woman decapitates him.
- Darkseid sees Steppenwolf die

- END

Post Credit scene:

- Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter (who was introduced in Man of Steel) visit Bruce to warn him of a war coming.

JL Part 2

- Batman starts a preemptive strike on Apocalypses
- JL want to go. But, superman is hesitant since Lois is prego with his baby.
- Aquaman wants to chill in Atlantis. But, Johnny Depp's bully convinces him to join the fight.
- Supes agrees to join them. Lois hangs out in Bruce's house with Alfred until the fight is over.
- Boom tube to fight alongside the new gods and lanterns.
- Supes get captured. Darkseid uses the codex (remember that plot point from MOS) within his DNA
- Using the codex, Darkseid manipulates Supes' free will.
- Without a yellow sun on Apocalypses, Superman has no power.
- Darkseid makes it to Earth
- Earth is destroyed.
- CUE the NIGHTMARE SCENE FROM BvS.
- Supes escapes his prison on Apokolypse and makes it back to Earth.
- Supes sees that earth is wiped out and breaks down. That's two planets he calls home wiped out.
- Lois and Martha are dead.
- Superman kills Darkseid by himself.
- Superman takes over Earth.

Movie Ends

JL 3

- Superman rules with an iron fist.
- Home worlds of the other heroes (Amazon Island, Atlanta, Metropolis, Gotham, Billings, etc) are gone.
- Batman, Cyborg, and Flash make the treadmill for Flash to go back in time.
- Barry warns everyone to NOT go to Apocalypses in the first movie.
- A rat does not accidentally turn on the time machine.
- Batman searches for the last piece of Pimm Particles...I mean kryptonite...to fight Supes again.
- Batman is captured by Superman's henchmen.
- Superman blames Batman for the events that led to Earth being destroyed and the death of his family.
- Supes kills Batman easily.
- Flash dies by being torn apart by the time force.
- But, Flash was able to warn them all from going to Apocalypses.
- Everyone takes a defensive posture and waits for Darkseid to come to earth so they can have home court advantage.
- Atlantians, Amazonians, Meta-Humans, the 92 Dream Team, the JL, and the new gods form a team.
- They defeat Darkseid. But, he they don't kill him.
- Lois gives birth in the Batcave while the fight happens outside.
- Darkseid tries to steal the codex from the baby.
- Before he is able to, Batman gets between him and Lois and shoots Darkseid with a GUN!
- Before he dies, Darkseid shoots Batman with an Omega Beam and Batman dies.
- The world mourns the death of Tony Wayne.
- Meta-humans come out of the woodwork to join the JL to honor Bruce.
- Lois and Clark name the baby Jonathan Bruce Kent.

The End.

They need a hard reboot and it needs to be dark. DC isn't marvel with the comedic relief every two seconds. Also, DC characters are mad overpowered, to the point of being god-like, it should feel that way. They need to introduce more superman villains like brainiac, Darkseid, Luthor (with proper casting this time). DC is about the Christian lore moreso than marvel it seems. Throw Trigon and Constantine into the mix, get a horror movie director to direct the flick and make it fucking scary!

DC could have been legendary but they tried way to hard to follow Marvel's formula.

Hey Warner Bros, maybe leave the whole "expanded universe" projects to Disney and Marvel. You had a billion dollar hit with "Joker", and a pretty big hit with "The Batman". The older I get the more attractive this proposition seems.

completely agree. Many of their best movies were not a part of that overarching storyline. I thought the newer Suicide Squad movie was a really solid entry too and that distinctly felt like it was its own thing even with the references to the previous film and other DC tie ins.

The focus really should be on utilizing all those good properties they have to make interesting, entertaining movies. Who cares about the universe building. As you said, not everyone can be the MCU. But if you keep making solid movies, people will check them out.

Joker and The Batman felt like a breath of fresh air in the genre as far as I was concerned. And guess what, they’re both about Gotham and have nothing to do with each other. It’s not a big deal. Let different directors try their hand with different iterations of well known characters.

Fuuuuuuuuuuu!!! ..... k

Total bummer. I was looking forward to DCU staying on track and making some good movies.
