Islam runs 5k in 18:30mins

It’s not that impressive. Islam is ungodly strong and huge so I wouldn’t expect his running to be very elite

Wonderboy is right though, Islam's striking by itself isn't that great. It has improved and it's good for a grappling based fighter, but compared to other high level strikers it's at the basic level. But it works in mma because of his takedown threats and the grappling aspect. Straight striking like kickboxing Islam wouldn't be the favorite even with a smaller Volk.

Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhh I agree

In his pre fight press conference he said so. Anyone who races knows that is really fucking fast

lol no it isn't, especially on flat ground.
There are highschool girls who can break 17 min.

He runs in the mountains

It is not easy to run 18 mins lol

some of y’all are crazy af
Correct, but running 18:30 when your entire life is cardio athletics is a bit easier than for the 99% of the world that aren't full time athletes.

It's pretty damn impressive considering he's not a runner. That's a 6min mile pace.

To me that's like finding out Derrick Lewis benches 455 or something. Not elite, but definitely makes you say "god damn!"

Also, I remember seeing Mike Perry's IG story and the dude was dying running a 10k at a 8:30/mi pace, just as a comparison off the top of my head.

I ran 18:53 my sophomore year of HS, it’s not THAT fast. Top highschool kids run at least sub 16 minutes.

It’s a decent pace for a non runner though.
Senior year I was 17:30 ish. There were some kids who already trained with college teams hitting 15:40s and shit.

WTF! Is his plan is to run away from Volk like this or maybe pole volt over the cage?:

He's like a lost kid in a crowd without Khadad it seems? Second guessing himself. Body strength is one thing, but he seems to have mind game issues. He'll end up like this....

MMA cardio is less specific than people think.
Some specialists like Ryan Hall will train barely anything but technique, but that won't give them the base conditioning to push the pace wherever the fight goes.
18:30 is a good time, but not a whole lot faster than expected for someone with his conditioning regimen. For the shorter distances, base cardio makes all the difference.
For 10K and 15K his times will look increasingly less impressive.

But since this is only supposed to be indicative of his general conditioning, fair enough. Cardio is everything.

I bet most UFC fighters that fight at 155 and under can do around 18 minutes. Islam is probably average for a MMA fighter at his weight bracket.
I don't think many run for speed. They mostly just jog from what I've seen from a lot of fighters. There are going to be some fighters that are fast runners though because some people push it regardless of the type of training they are doing. Lots of boxers also have fast average mile times.

You'd be shocked how many super athletic dudes can't maintain speed past a mile and a half. Most of these guys train sprints on intervals and weights for explosiveness. I'd wager most LWs can manage 21 minutes give or take.

Just depends on their personal training layout.
Yeah running conditioning is very different compared to just regular fight conditioning when you focus on speed and fast mile times.

Not sure, but my guess is that kind of running can do more damage than good for mma athlete.

What kind of running is best for mma ?

It strengthens athlete will and determination, but Islam surely has it at this stage.

Is Islam just promoting ) ?

It is good for someone who isn't focused on running. Speaks to a level of fitness, but we already know that he will be in amazing shape.

I don't know how it is in professional running, but for fighting sports I don't think it's more likely to run the 5K faster at 31 than you were in highschool.

I remember doing this with the Judo and Wrestling teams and the best times were 16- early 20 YO.
