Islam Gets Destroyed at 170 | Agreed or Disagreed?

Not sure about "destroyed," but the 15-pound weight difference is significant. Some fighters at 170 pounds are big guys who walk around at 210 pounds. Islam will face a significant height and reach disadvantage against many of the top competitors.

Leon seems to be the worst fight for him. I think he could definitely have success against guys like Colby, Burns, Wonderboy. But I don't see him having much success at all against Leon.

Man you can't explain anything these days without it being labeled an "excuse" lol.

Same way we can all say Khabib underperformed compared to expectations vs Al Iaquinta right? Except he took that fight on less than 48 hrs notice & was preparing for a different opponent. Not an excuse, just an explanation of the facts of the matter to bring that up.
What are you talking about?

Islam had the same amount of time to prepare for that fight as Volk did. They both had a few months IIRC so if Islam had a bad weight cut that's on him.

Now, if you want to talk about actual facts. Volk took the rematch on 10 days notice.

He also admitted to going through mental struggles and alcohol abuse recently.

Glad you agree with me. Islam outstruck them. Threat of takedown indeed. You could just have agreed from the beginning instead of let your pad leak all over the forum. At least the blood covered up your tears. See below. You're welcome for the intro on how MMA striking works, noob.

Talk about being triggered lmao.

masvidal had success at ww and he's half the fighter islam is
not really to be honest... Masvidal beat a no knees, Ben Askren, a (We now know) shitty fighter in Darren Till, an old already rich Nate Diaz, got destroyed by wonderboy, lost to Benson Henderson for some reason... and beat the ghost of Ellenburger... he doesn't really have any good wins... except Till was rated at the time.. and Till pretty much never won another fighter after Woodley... Masvidal just had star power so they let him fight and lose like six times to actually good fighters at WW and he never won a round.

I'm just not seeing this match up against Leon as a big obstacle for Islam.

Leon's TDD looked good against the ghost of Usman past. His striking is very good but he's not aggressive.

Belal is gonna finish him anyway so Islam will have to take the belt off him and that seems like a much more difficult fight.

Belal said yesterday in an interview he would never fight Islam. I think Belal is an easier fight for Islam than Leon or Shavkat. Belal likes going and training with that team because he knows how good they are.

I think Sean Brady or Shakavt could give him problems.

Islam isn't fighting at 185.

I can give him lots of credit and feel he could win a belt at 170, but ain't no way he's moving to 185. Certainly not without a 3 year jon-jones-esque bulk.

I'm just glad he's fighting.

Not like...ahem...Khabib.....

Your back isn't sore yet from all the goalposts you've been moving around? A minute ago you thought you educated me on how Islam's striking. Now that you realize I did that for you, it's about how posts are quoted?

Prior to that you took back your dumbass thread title by admitting "destroyed" was out of pocket.

In b/n you tried to focus on 1 fight, asked people questions, and called their answers excuses.

You are a shit tier poster and I can't believe I wasted multiple posts helping you understand how shit tier you are.

I’m not sold on Leon just yet when considering who he’s beaten since getting the belt. That’s subject to change if he puts a hurting on Belal however

He beats everyone except Leon & Shavkat imo
This right here ^

Those are the 2 guys Islam would find challenging to take and keep down and are very skilled on the feet. But I can see Islam having his way with the rest, or at least out-skilling them (e.g. Belal)

Hopefully Shavkat will be champ by the time Islam is ready to move up. That is the fight I want to see if Islam has the balls to accept it.

170lb would be closer to his natural and optimal weight. I think he'd do pretty good. I think the competition might be higher at 170 as well. Would be a great test and I'd be excited to see it.
However....I'd prefer to see a rematch title fight with Arman Tsarukyan first.

Depends on how much the weight cut is draining him.

Plenty of fighters have had MORE success by moving up a weight class (Strickland, Whittaker, etc).

Leon has a height/reach advantage, but it only takes one takedown for Makhachev to win. Poirier is a better defensive grappler than Leon imo.

Not to take anything away from the guys that he beat but going to war with a 35 year old Poirier who's about to retire and going 5 rounds against a FW in a fight that he arguably lost (1st Volk fight) isn't going to cut it at WW.

Respect to Islam for wanting to move up and challenge for a 2nd belt, something Khabib never had the desire to do even though he was much more dominant than Islam. Khabib also knew that it's a different game at WW.

Poirier said it himself recently that he would not move to WW after years of hinting a possible move. He said he trains with some of those guys in the gym and they're just way bigger.

Edwards is in his absolute prime right now and dispatched of Colby with ease. Was able to easily stuff Usman's takedown in their last fight. He has amazing striking.

Islam is biting off more than he can chew and gets destroyed in a fight against Edwards imho

So, Islam is not that good because:
- he went to war with Poirier = well, actually, he beat him 3-1 until the finish. A war means a close fight. It wasn't!
- he barely beat a FW = well, actually, one of the best FW ever, a very well rounded fighter, who could beat most LW on the rooster in that night.
Nevermind that he had staph, that he finish Volk the second time, that he has quite many finishes against good fighters.

But Leon is great, although:
- he barely beat an aging Colby, who didn't do nothing. It was with ease, but it was baaaad AF. From "That man is as good as dead because he talked shit about my criminal father" to "I will sit there and do nothing against him"
- got rocked badly against an old LW Nate and won a decision
- lost badly on the feet vs Tumenov
- couldn't finish guys like LW Cerrone, LW RDA, Barberena
- struggled against Gunnar
- had an Hail Mary vs Usman (a great one, I admit)

we don't know how strong Islam will be without the weight cut.
I am very interested to see him fight Leon but first he needs to finish Arman again who is beating everyone they put infront of him

That's some real revision. Leon's been taken down 11 times in his last 3 fights, and neither Usman nor Colby are any submission threat, and they don’t have particularly good top control either. He was nearly KO'd by Nate Diaz before that, and had a split decision with Gunnar Nelson. Let's not pretend Leon is just mowing everybody down. I don't think the outpoint with leg kicks strategy is going to work on Islam, and Islam isn't a big volume striker either, so it's probably pretty boring on the feet until Islam gets him down and chokes him.
