Islam Gets Destroyed at 170 | Agreed or Disagreed?

Not to take anything away from the guys that he beat but going to war with a 35 year old Poirier who's about to retire and going 5 rounds against a FW in a fight that he arguably lost (1st Volk fight) isn't going to cut it at WW.

Respect to Islam for wanting to move up and challenge for a 2nd belt, something Khabib never had the desire to do even though he was much more dominant than Islam. Khabib also knew that it's a different game at WW.

Poirier said it himself recently that he would not move to WW after years of hinting a possible move. He said he trains with some of those guys in the gym and they're just way bigger.

Edwards is in his absolute prime right now and dispatched of Colby with ease. Was able to easily stuff Usman's takedown in their last fight. He has amazing striking.

Islam is biting off more than he can chew and gets destroyed in a fight against Edwards imho
I am not sure where all his confidence is coming from. LW Burns went up and made a living at WW and got to a title fight.

Not saying he would beat Leon, but takes like this are shortsighted. Lets see him fight up there first before saying he gets destroyed.

I mean sure, if you're gonna use every excuse in the book anyone can make those wins look more dominant than they were lol.

Saying he will get destroyed was an exagerration on my part but I don't think he has anything for Edwards.

Belal and Shavkat are two other opponents I would favor over Islam in a fight.

LMFAO you keep talking about the "first Vok" fight and then when someone tells you a precise medical reason for Islam's performance, cardio, and strength being subpar you say "every excuse."

Here's how about this for every excuse. Ignore the domination of Charles. Ignore the second Volk fight. Ignore 7/8 finishes and 3 wins over (at the time he faced them) top 3 P4P fighters back-to-back-to-back.

Ignore all that, but explain the first Volk fight away w/ a legitimate, medical, reason and it's "every excuse in teh book"

Brother get a fucking clue. He might lose to Leon. But it will not be based on anything credible you've shared in this thread to date.

Destroyed is a bit much. the last person that made that succesful jump from lightweight to welterweight was BJ Penn, 20 years ago. RDA tried and was ok but was not really belt material. Overall, We don't know how Islam will handle the size difference of 20 lbs and fighting fighters bigger to him, I think he can be competetive with most of T10 with his skillset but its hard to say with certainity.

Shavat is bigger and stronger and a little better standing. Islam is slightly better grappling . Edwards is a 50/50 fight

That’s ridiculous lol. The number one contender at WW trains with Islam and talks about how Islam dominates him and would be champ at 185. No shot he gets “destroyed at WW”. Even an out of prime RDA made it to an interim title shot at WW. gatekeeper LWs masvidal and burns became contenders at WW.

Burns didn't do too bad either.

He would not get destroyed considering Burns made it to the top after moving up from LW. The size difference between 155ers and 170 isn't that big. 155ers aren't walking around that much bigger than 170'ers. It's not as big of a difference like when comparing 170'ers moving up to MW where WW's are walking around at around 200 while MW's are walking around at like 220.

You really never know, guys like Gilbert Burns, RDA, BJ Penn, Sean Sherk, Diego Sanchez all showed that the size difference is not huge and they could be competitive against the bigger guys.

WW isnt the deepest division. He could have success there.
Maybe not the deepest division compared to others but with the likes of Edwards, Shavkat, JDM, Belal, etc it's a fucking scary one.

Islam won't be the bigger guy at WW and has already struggled with two guys smaller than him, now granted Poirier and Volk are no joke but still.

Even though Burns moved up during the worst era of WW in like 20 years, if he could make it to the top of the division, surely Islam can too right?

Every fighter can say they had a bad weight cut. You can't just throw that as an excuse.

A short notice fight, that's an actual provable fact.

The funniest part is using a bad weight cut as an excuse in a fight against a much smaller, 5"5 opponent lmao.

As if being the much bigger guy wasn't enough of an advantage. Poor guy had a tough weight cut.

Edwards went 5 rounds woth lightweights RDA, Diaz and cowboy, what do you think of it, TS?

I gotta see a healthy, hydrated, swole Islam come in at 170 first to tell

He’s a huge LW and you can see the weight cut is affecting his fighting style nowadays

I think he'd do fine at WW. His striking has come a long way, and IDK if anyone can outgrapple him. As often as not, in double champ fights, the "smaller" fighter wins (Cejudo, Conor, GSP, DC, Alex, Jones, Amanda).

I'd narrowly favor Islam over Leon, but I think there are definitly worse style matches for him. Shavkat is a scary prospect. I think Jack is another problem.

All I see are tears. U asked why Islam didn't wreck Volk in first fight. How tf are you going to ask a question, then when it receives a legitimate medical and scientific answer you're going to call that excuses? Then don't fucking ask.

Islam outstruck Volk, Charles, and DP. All likely viewed as top 15 strikers in the UFC. He did so on merit but also the strength of his grappling and takedowns. It's a fact. Quit crying.

To come in here and pretend like Leon's going to shit on him when Islam keeps out-striking elite strikers is dumb. You may be right on the outcome. But as I said before, it will not be on the strength of anything you've posted in this thread.

- Islam had staph recently
- Edwards didn't even "destroy" Colby Covington who performed like shit lol

Idk man, that was a pretty dominant win for Edwards. Wasn’t competitive at all if my memory serves me correctly.
