Is this Renzo Gracie quote accurate from your experience?

And the atomic bomb can kill more people in a matter of seconds than Renzo can kill in his lifetime.

Almost anyone can understand the theories in any BJJ technique, only difference is they might not be as quick-thinking in a fight to apply it. It's no rocket science.

On the other hand, pretty sure little to no BJJ black belts can understand rocket science.
You bring up the atomic bomb, but who uses the atomic bomb? When would an atomic bomb be used? For what reason?

See where this all connects and fits in with combat/war/martial arts? Everything is about survival either by hand, or with a weapon.

That doesn't make us better philosophers or more intelligent though.
No because the ones that lead to victory do so by tactics/strategy, it isn't just brute strength. So intelligence is required along with strength.

So what constitutes "being able to defend yourself"?

What if I'm a BJJ brown belt and I meet Renzo Gracie? I'm gonna get smashed.

What if prime Renzo Gracie meets prime Sakuraba? Renzo's getting smashed.

What if Renzo meets strongest man in the world Thor Björnsson? Renzo's getting smashed.

Strength rules all at it's core. That's my point. No matter how smart or educated you are, it doesn't mean your better than anyone, especially someone who can end you where you stand lol.

That bothers intelligent people internally because they are just inadequate in a different way from those who are physically imposing.

Waxing poetic....

damn renzo is a dirty as fighter.

Firstly, this thread isn't all about war and fighting. But I'll debate you.

Who is more important?

The one soldier on the ground or the scientist who developed the atomic bomb?

The one sniper who shoots really well or the engineer who designed the gun with which the sniper shot with?

The tank commander or the engineer who invented the tank?

The stealth fighter pilot or the scientist that developed stealth technology?

Any country, any government, any military general worth his salt, would sacrifice a platoon of strong and able-bodied alpha males who bench teh 275 just to save their one geeky scrawny scientist or kill the enemies geeky scrawny scientist.

In this day and age, technology is king. The rest are cannon fodder.

Quite the opposite.

Seems to me a lot of non-academically-inclined people want to regain a certain sense of self-importance via being more physically imposing or tougher "on the streetz".

We're no longer in the medieval times. This is 2020. This is the information age. Knowledge is king.

Of course not. I'm just debating that fighters protected those philosophers and the educated through human history. There just as important.

Oh yeah, no doubt about that. I just don't think that (usually) the fighters are also the philosophers.

Medieval times. You can be ended by a common criminal or thug today .

Can't use that knowledge if your not alive lol.

I have a PhD in a STEM from a non-Ivy, but school in the next tier down (in my field...if my school was a current UFC LW it would be Dan Hooker or RDA). I'm also a Black/Brown in Judo/BJJ.

The quote is not true. It is true however, that if you stick with grappling long enough, you will learn valuable things about yourself that you can apply to the rest of your life for the better.

The idea of learning lessons through stress and direct physical challenge is completely real and legit. Overcoming real, authentic challenges is a big part of developing self-esteem. The "no-BS" nature of grappling helps as well. It pretty much pushes reality right in your face and forces you to recognize it and deal.

Anyone agreeing with Renzo is probably academically below average.

Imagine thinking inventing a new BJJ choke is equivalent to inventing new technology.

PhD Professor: I derived the mass-energy formula E=mc^2
BJJ Professor: Pfft that's nothing. I discovered you can break another man's elbow if you bend it the other way. Imma call it the Kimura.
They are talking about philosophy. Not physics or technology.
A PhD is called Doctor of Philosophy.
That is not what I commented. But carry on.

Mmm'kay

Those scientist and engineers can't do there jobs without soilders protecting them during war.

So... Ya.

A Ph.D is to philosophy what the BMF belt is to bad mother fuckers.

Of course they can. They would keep doing the same job but it would benefit someone else. Ever heard of Werner Von Braun?

No they can't if you just let the enemy get to them and easily kill them.
